Hi. I dont know where to start. Ok, so i bought a Sony 5.1 900Watts surround sound with HDMI and Fiber Optic sound. So i then purchased the HDMI cable and the Fiber Optic cable. I hook everything up, I connected the fiber optic cable from the receiver to the dvd player, then i connected the DVD player to my TV via HDMI cable.... and I go to the receiver and I set the audio to come out of the fiber optic. Ok here's the problem, I get real low sound. And when i try to raise the volumn, when i get to volumn 54 or something it says "PROTECTING" on my receiver then it shuts itself off. Can anyone suggest something? What did i do wrong, what didnt i do?

Read the Sony setup instructions. You have connected the components incorrectly.

HDMI supports video and audio, so you do not need the fiber optic cable. Also, you should connect the DVD HDMI to the Sony receiver HDMI input and then the Sony HDMI output to the TV HDMI input.

Keep in mind that not all tv programs are in surround sound, only those program with the Dolby Digital will have surround sound. You can get a video audio switch box that has at less 3 inputs for optical cable and then connect the output to your home theater in a box. I would connect the video portion directly to the tv. Hope this will help you out.

Your inputs are hooked up properly. Do you have any analog audio sources? Do they sound ok? Try the analog output of your DVD player. Is the volume ok? Does your receiver and DVD player have coax digital audio? If so, try that--there may be a defect in your optical components. If all your audio inputs have low level, then your speakers may not be connected properly or your amp is defective. If only the optical has the problem, make sure your DVD player has digital audio output selected.
