I hear talking back to the TV helps. might look a little silly, but it makes sense. you know what their talking about, they speak at normal speeds and about current things, and you can practice on your own.

You need to start talking my friend and I mean alot when people start telling you to shut up then your doing the right thing. Also think before you say something and also try sounding out the words that will get rid of your stuttering. You can also practice at home with the TV as your guide when your watching a show or movie...

as a person coming from and living in a non-english speaking country myself, i can suggest that you watch tv shows in english with closed caption turned in; if you're good with writing and reading, then associating that with the sounds, the way people pronounce things, should make your ear accostumed to the language and thus make it easier to hold a conversation. you should try repeating it too, in your head first, then out loud whenever you have the chance. talk to yourself out loud. just with little things. also music, if you like music, makes your ear grow really accostumed to the sounds. and it's an easier way, because you can look up the lyrics, sing along, and again, focus on the way words are pronounced then practise it yourself. plus, singing's fun.

to help the shyness with it, i would suggest you always imagine the other person trying to speak your language, so that you don't forget how everyone always looks a little silly speaking a language that isn't their own. maybe even speak in your own language a bit, have the person not understand, explain it to them if they're interested, just so that you remind yourself that you aren't as dumb as you might hear yourself to be.. you're just coming from a different language, a different culture. (small things, throwing in something like "oh, silla, that's the spanish word for that" to reaffirm to yourself -mostly- and the other person, too, that you can hold a conversation without talking funny and sounding weird. that you'd be more in control if words weren't so foreign to you. the nicer people i think will usually show interest and make fools out of themselves in trying to pronounce your word. hence showing you that you're not the only person who goes through that. and if they're not so nice and don't care about your word, then remember that there you are, making a real effort to speak another language, and that it's their loss if their minds are so closed that they can't care for learning something new.)

good luck!

It depends on where you are now. I would suggest joining a club where you can socialise with other english spoken people.

Ideally something you are already good at or interested in to assist with relaxation and confidence.

Another idea, albeit a little goofy, is to watch game shows and answer the questions out loud, it isnt exactly conversation, but at least its transactional.

Unfortunately the only way to become proficient in spoken language is by SPEAKING.

You say you're shy, so you seemed doomed from the start.

Speak as much as you can to native English speakers. (be in in person, watching TV, or conversing on line).

The only way to learn is to embarrass yourself, so don't be afraid of that. When we learn to ride a bike, we must fall down a few times allowing everyone in the neighborhood to see. Within weeks, we ride like champs!

Think about what you want to say and join conversations accordingly. Talk only when you have something meaningful to say. Its much easier to communicate if you have something pertinent to contribute to a conversation.
