Hi Nikita P.,
The media has, as usual, blown the issue out of proportion. It funny how the media doesn't tell you about "friendly" breeds, both big and small that have attacked people and they have. Pit bulls are the most wonderful, affectionate family dogs and love to cuddle. It ultimately comes down to the owner of any dog and how they are treated, socialised and trained. I hope this answers your question.
Sincerely,
Alice H.

Because people are ingorant and lazy choose to believe stereotypes rather than seek the truth. Lets take Michelle's answer. In this person's haste to spread ingorance concerning a subject they know little about, they actually state that ALL dogs are unpredictable, rather than what they really meant, which was Pit Bulls are unpredictable. Pit Bulls, by design, are not human aggressive. That comes from lack of socialization. ALL dogs are unpredictable if you don't know much about their behavior (which is true about most dog owners). It is also fact that 99% of the population has no idea how to approach a dog. But for the good grace of most dogs there would be a profoundly higher number of dog bites and children would bear a lot more scars

Well, dog attacks are automatically attributed by the media to a pit bull (American Pit Bull Terrier) when many times the dog is actually a mix or another breed altogether. Some bully breeds are even hard for dog people to tell apart. Forget about the people who know next to nothing about dog breeds. Geez, I even once had someone ask me if my Labrador Retriever was a "pet bull" and then proceed to tell me she likes all dogs, "except pet bulls because they are mean." Morons..
Also because stupid people are breeding APBTs for aggression and even more stupid people are buying them (because they want a dog with a "tough" image) and deliberately training them to be aggressive.
There are breeders of APBTs and other similar bully breeds who are trying to preserve their breeds and breed for sound bodies and temperment. It's just that they are few and far between, it seems.

I've had all 3 of my pit bulls for 5 years now WITHOUT any type of "stereotypical" incidents occuring. Only people that are illiterate on pit bulls tend to jump to conclusions -- based on common myths and pre-conceived fears about this breed. These people don't know pit bulls from bull mastiffs from their heads up their a*ss. Bunch of f-ucking retards, seriously.

Because they would rather have someone else (news reports) tell them what to think, without investigating themselves.
There is a wonderful book written by Janis Bradley, "Dogs Bite but Balloons and Slippers are More Dangerous" that debunks a lot of the hysteria about all dog bites, including Pitbulls. I recommend anyone who cares about dogs read it.
Any dog can become aggressive. I am currently working to rehabilitate a severely aggressive Golden Retriever at our Animal Control.

The uninformed believe just because they read a random, hyped-up horror story in a newspaper somewhere that the whole breed is like that. It was Dobermans in the 80's, Rottweiler's in the 90's, and Pitbulls currently. It's mostly sensationalized by the media.
Those of us who are actually owned by a big baby, understand the breed much more and the implications of good breeding, socialization, and training.

because many people can't admit the (shock! gasp! horror!) the dog's owner might be a bad person. the do-gooders would have us believe that there are no "bad" people, only misguided ones. & society allows or encourages them to bury their "misguided" poor wee heads in the proverbial sand. aggressive dogs are the result of poor, negligent or abusive owners. when a dog bites, 9 times out of 10, it's the owner that needs putting down more than the animal.

people think pits are bad because they have been given a bad rap by people who abuse and fight them. these people turn these dogs into killers until they are used up in the ring and then turn them loose or worse. It is a very sad situation for the breed.

Because they haven't met the nice ones. 1% of the Pitbulls cause 100% of the trouble. Yet people want to believe all Pitbulls are bad.
We live in a society where people prey on our fears and don't want us to think for ourselves.

I think all breeds are capable of being aggressive and inflicting damage. I think it all depends, on how the owners raise them. It's not the dog's fault, it's the owners. The dog is going to do, what it was taught to do. It doesn't know any better.
