We live in US and I'm wondering if he carries a US bank debit card, will it work in NZ/Aus ATM's? Will a big fee be charged each time he uses it for currency conversion etc.?
I don't think carrying much cash is wise for him, since he'll be camping and staying at youth hostels etc. It seems like just withdrawing a bit at a time from his bank account would be best. Also he'll have a credit card for plane fares etc.
Thanks for your help!

the best way (most convienent, safest and best excahnge rate/less lost in fees) is just to take money out of your US bank account at an Aussie ATM (the money will come out in Aussie dollars!)

He should take out about 1 weeks worth of money at a time, that way the fees are not too bad.

If his card has the right symbols on it, it will work in OZ. he should check his card and check with his bank.

In Australia there are banks open 5 days a week 09.30-4pm and will exchange US dollars for Australian currency There are also ATM's but they do not handle International exchange

In NZ there is no problem with banks money exchanges or shops. NZ is unique and excellent for trabvellers any shop can change any currency and give you change in NZ dollars. Tjhere are also International exchange ATMs in NZ and many are in all night supermarkets. The South Isalnd is better than the Nth Island for scenery beaches and money exchange

Visa is accepted in Both countries including Visa debit card

The should be no problems with the US Band Debit Cards, but just check with his bank first. Friends of mine have travelled internationally and had no problems at all in the UK and US with Australia Debit Cards.
Hope that your son has fun, tell him that Bells Beach is beautiful.
Although once he sees how beautiful the beaches are and how good the surf is he may never want to go home.

I think your local bank only charges a small fee for using another bank's machine-you should ask them. When we came over to Australia we opened bank accounts there, but we had work visas, so that might be different.
