Danes are prone to a lot of health problems that are often fatal, like bone cancer and bloat. 7 is an average, and some Danes live longer and some shorter. Their size makes them age faster than the smaller dogs, and the fact that a lot of people keep them outside make it worse. Plus the fact that people breed them to be as big as the can possibly get doesn't help either.

That used to be the norm for Danes. All giant breeds have shorter life spans. Human giants have much shorter lives than usual.

With better nutrition and better breeding over the last few years, Danes are living longer. I would guess the average is now about 9 years, but 10 and 11 years old are becoming common.

My oldest Dane lived to 15 years and was healthy right up until the last. The others have varied from 8 to 11 years. Nutrition plays a large part of this - Dane kibble should contain 12-14% fat and no more than 22-24% protein. Plenty of exercise is a large part of their health too.

With more research continuing, I expect their life span will continue to lengthen. And that's good! But I would take 7 years with a Dane, against any number of years with another breed.

They averaged the age for Slim Danes at 7 yo 9 yrs. and for Euro danes it's averaged at 11 to 13 yrs. Usually Mastiff breeds have shorter life spans because they mature and grow faster.
I have though met several Danes and mastiffs who are well past the age of 7. So that average seems to be becoming a myth.

The average lifespan of a great dane is 7-9 years. They have been seen to live up to 15 years, with the proper nutrition and care, although it's very rare.

The Giant breeds, such as Great Danes, tend to be shorter lived than smaller dogs. Their hearts have to work harder keeping blood pumped to all parts of the body.

However, many giants live past that average life expectancy. Many things can influence a dog's lifespan, quality food, regular exercise, keeping your dog at a proper weight, don't let it get fat. Give your dog things that interest it, mental stimulation can influence life, also.

Regular aerobic exercise and excellent food are the best way to help your giant have a long life.

I don't know if it's that young. Big dogs tend to have shorther life spans than little ones. I think the average life span for all dogs is about 8 or 9 so maybe that's right.

Big dogs don't live as long as smaller dogs.

However, the big dogs average life is 9 years...not 6.

Most small to medium dogs....13 years.

the skipperke, however, is an almost unbeleivable 21 years!!!!

It's never long enuff, though. Is it?
