People always recommend getting a smaller parrot to start you off if you have not had a parrot before. However, these smaller parrots can live at least a decade and many may reach two decades. That's way too long for you to wait before you get the parrot you actually wanted in the first place. I say go right ahead with the parrot you want. However, you must must do a lot of reading and research before you decide on the bird of your choice. Even people who've had a lot of experience and done a lot of research mess up big time with African Greys. They are really intelligent and most parrot owners honestly are simply not prepared enough..

This would all depend on what your situation and wants/needs are. Every breed of parrot and individual has a different personality. African Greys have one of the largest speaking abilities of different parrot breeds. Of the small parrots, from what I know and have seen, it seems that Senegals tend to be more moody. I have met some very nice Amazons. Conures can be sweet.
There are so many influencing factors. First you need to do a LOT of research on the different breeds and common personality traits. That is only one part of the picture. You have to consider how old the parrot is. If it is a hand-raised baby just weaned you can raise the perfect pet. If the bird has lived with someone else of multiple different owners throughout the years, you would definitely want to spend time with it to assess it's personality.
Space also needs to be considered. African Grey Parrots need a large cage, whereas Conures, Senegals and other small parrots can have much smaller cages.
Very important is to remember the lifespan and how long this commitment will be.
Just some thoughts.
Edit: If you are considering a much smaller bird, I would recommend a hand-raised baby cockatiel for a first bird-they are generally "easier".

Well, that depends on how much time that you have to spend with the bird. African greys need a lot of interaction and things to keep them occupied. They have the inteligence of about a 5 year old child. They don't do well with long periods alone.
If this is your first bird, I would reccomend a cockatiel or smaller bird.
Remember that you will have to purchase toys, have vet care, and a large cage for them along with time out of the cage.
Try talking to breeders around your area. research the different breeds of parrots and parakeets. See the birds and get used to handling them if possible. That way you can find the bird that is best for you.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a parrot. We have a conure(Patagonian) and he is loud!!! He is very funny and great to be around. His vocabulary is not what an African Grey will be though. All parrots need time well spent with them, you cannot just buy a cage and put them in it!!!
I wish you luck in your decision!! All parrots are awesome!!

as somebody else said..why not start with a smaller bird for a pet. african greys are super intelligent and need lots of company...they do not take kindly to being alone. however, if you put lots of time and love into an african grey..you will have a great companion for many many years..they are fantastic & good speakers!

I think Jusme is lying or must be seriously inept with birds. I have two Greys and I know plenty of people with Greys that think they are fantastic - playful, affectionate, not noisy, talkative, interactive - absolutely everything you want in a pet. Plus they are not inclined to chew furniture or anything like that. But Greys take a huge commitment - in time, in cleaning and attention. Do not expect to simply put it in a cage and expect this perfect wonderful pet.
Maybe that was Jusme's problem. So sad to think of the torture that idiot is putting his birds through, if he really does have birds...

Personally any bird is better than a African Grey. Grey's are the untouchables in the bird world. (Yes, I know that there are some decent ones, far and few between. Just wait til breeding season hits then talk to me about their perfect behaviors.) Grey's are great if you want a feathered tape recorder that lives a really long time. Wanting these birds is way different than having and living with one.
