This is God we are talking about right? The creator of all that exist? Somehow you think he is subject to Scientific law? Can I ask you a silly question how can you have luminaries if there were no light? It's sort of a chicken and egg question isnt it?

Very easy, I will let you in on a secret for all of us that read the Bible and is this, "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Genesis 1:3, and there is a lot more things that God can do, the real question should be that some one is right and someone is wrong and when you die in which side do you want to be on, the only thing it that you have to do is accept that there are many things that you will never understand but that does not change the facts that there are true, and Christ Jesus is the only way to the Father and all you have to do is to call on him, believe in him and the things he said, and let him answer your questions, God does not tell you to check your brain at the door he does say come lets reason together. Hope it helps.

It depends on what you believe.

One theory is that it is the day that God created the angels. Notice that God said that He saw that the light was good. That must be a spiritual statement and not a physical statement because there is nothing inherently evil about a lack of physical light. He separated the light from the darkness. This could possibly be where He separated the angels that were committed to following Him and the demons who were not (which are really angels who were disobedient and loyal to Lucifer).

Another thing to note is that in the six day creation story, the three days are triadic. Day 1 (space, time, and light) and Day 4 (physical luminaries to be placed in that space and time) correspond, Day 2 (expanse of air between waters) and Day 5 (creatures for the air and water) correspond, and Day 3 (dry land) and Day 6 (creatures for the dry land) correspond.

So, an angelic explanation could be... or, it appears that days 1 through 3 were preparatory for days 4 through 6. It's an interesting question and wiser folks than I are still pondering. Good luck.

Various theories I have come up with:

a) light produced by the big bang must have been immense, so this could be the initial light
b) the sun was in preliminary stages before it was fully created on day 4

Also, the whole passage of Genesis 1 is very poetic. If you line up the things created on the first 3 days with the last 3 days, you see very clearly how they parallel each other. It could be a completely metaphorical passage.

God divided the Light from the darkness and then he created the lights in the heavens, but God is the source of all light both literally and figuratively speaking.

God does not need the sun to make light and God himself could even be the light, there are many things that make light

the light for th e first 3 days is unspecified
the light for day 4 on is the sun moon and stars

Since the scriptures say that GOD is Light, maybe HE was the light at that time. It really doesn't matter, we just know what is written. If we needed more HE would have provided it. Have a great LORD's DAY!

That is not the worst conflict in the creation myth. The first chapter states that man and woman were created at the same time, on the sixth day. God rests on the seventh day then he creates Adam from dust and Eve at a later time from Adam's rib. Who were the man and women he created on the sixth day, if he didn't create Adam from dust until after the seventh day?

Oh, and BTW, the light that is talked about in the creation myth is not God himself. If it were then he would not have called the light forth, it would have simply been there already because of his presence.

Well, the true nature of light was not understood until many centuries after the bible was written.

It also refers to the moon as a light source, which of course it is not.

But theists will just say he created light directly.
