Yes you can play videogames on the plasma,

BUT please read the manual, as static icon will " burn " into the srceen if being played for too long. If it has a gaming setting USE it and drop the temperature setting and brightness down.

Think that your dad doesn't want this to happen to his tv

I have connected both an X Box and PS2 to my 42 inch LG and had no problems short term. Burn in can occur with any static image on a Plasma. Even BBC interactive menu's will leave residue images if left running long enough. I actually have my old 28inch CRT hooked up for my children to play PS2 and X Box games, not the Plasma. Your dad is right to not risk what is actually a very large investment.
A quick note, Samsung Plasma's seem to suffer more from screen burn than any other make that I have come across.

What can happen on a plasma TV is image retention. If you have stationary objects, such as a score, on the screen in the same spot for long periods of time this image can burn-in or be retained in the screen. when you return to viewing TV programs or movies these images can be seen in the picture and do not go away. This can also occur in traditional projection and direct view CRT type TVs. As an experienced TV repairman I see this occur frequently and is not covered by any warranty. Be careful!

The problem is image burn-in, as described above. The newest plasmas have virtually eliminated this problem, and they even have ways of "recovering" from burn-in. However, some people believe that game playing on a plasma is not a good idea. You can minimize the problem by changing the image more frequently and keeping the brightness down.

it is true gaming and plasma dont mix long term. if it is just now and then you should be ok. never pause a game and leave the still image on screen. you wont have any problems with lcd.

You have to follow the warning in the manual for the game system, I remember my PS2 had something about not using it on projection televisions.
