I'm all for it. Divide Iraq into three countries - Kurdistan to the north, Iraq in the center, and Shitesillvania to the south. It would help stabilize the region more than anything else.

Yes I ask myself this question often. When you consider that Churchill drew the boundaries of the Arab/Middle East countries, apart from Israel, Lebanon and Jordan which were America's mistake. He used the traditional European conquer and divide method (Could be older than European but always successful). Make sure you include one or more tribes within the same boundaries. If you are the colonizer you put the smallest most opressed people in charge. They will be the most grateful and will take as much revenge as possible on their opponents. In the event you are giving up your control you can use the same tactic to cause mayhem. As it turns out Churchill split Kurdistan between Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia. The first three are the only ones mentioned today. Dopey Flanders says people should be able to prove they are deserving of a country. Well Churchill didn't think that and I would say no other colonists would think that , it's all about your own power. So go back to sleep Flanders, have your brandy and cigar and go back to sleep. As for Frangipani, Frangelico or whatever, "Iraq defeated Kurdistan in the olden days"? There was no Iraq in the olden days whatever they are. The Kurds were the nominated defenders of these Muslim lands by the other tribes. Until these tribes decided to end the arrangement for their own reasons. So assume these tribes are still afraid of the Kurds. By the way the Kurds have been pretty happy and quiet in the part of Iraq they have been given. Even prepared to be part of the new Iraqi government, no strings other than autonomy. We don't know what Iran and Turkey think but that's only because America won't talk to anyone. And if you think Kurds are unimportant, Saladin was a Kurd. A warrior General who showed mercy to his opponents. Too good for a bunch of squabbling European "Christian" pansies.
As for the Askers "graveyard for the Turks" comment I hope you do not live in Kurdish land. I hope you are just venting frustration and will not be silly enough to look for an unwinnable fight. Most people would like to live in peace together. Let old wounds heal.

I live in Turkey and some of my closest friends are Kurds but I fear that if the Kurds were given complete independence in northern Iraq it could turn out to be another Afganistan where once the oil revenus started coming in they would sponser terrorism and become a fundamentalist islam state and a threat to Turkey who would in the end have little choice but to invade with or without US approval. As in Afganistan there are factions within the Kurds who would be only too willing to kill each other off to gain power so it is more complicated than it appears.I think that autonomus areas under the governments of Iraq and also within Turkey might be a better long term soloution.

Yes, you're right. They should have their own country, considering the size of the Kurds population. The Kurds as well as the rest of Iraq used to be part of the Ottoman Empire. When the Ottoman Empire was defeated in World War I, the present day Iraq became a colony of the British Empire. Iraq at that time was composed of different tribal kingdoms. Great Britain then created one country out of these tribes and became what we now know as Iraq. The Kurds were one of these tribes.

Because the world at large has no interest in the Kurds having a homeland. The West and Britain in particular, have a very long memory and fought the Kurds during World War One and again inthe 1920s. It's all about oil, see.

i thought they did have a country of their own, Kurdistan. anyway my understanding was Kurds were like the gypsies of the Arabic world. dispersed and unsettled. but one religion or colour of hair does not identify a particular race worthy of ones own country. if that was the case then 1 and a half billion catholics could claim sovereignty over 1/4 of the worlds surface. autonomous regions clarified by the UN are no better than the Nazis claiming Sudetenland (a region in Czechoslovakia) as part of the Reich.

I agree that the Kurds should have an independent nation. They seem way smarter than the rest of the Iraqis. But then I have only met a few of Kurds.

Kurds were conquered by the Iraqis in the olden times and it is the reason why its territory is part of Iraq.

Allot of nations are living with the others peacefully and without any problem. Not every nation should have a Private country as you suggest especially those nations who became Muslim and they have no state in the history and depend on the foreigners in their struggle against their brothers like the Kurds who are supported by Zionism and US against Arabs and Turks(Muslims).
