In my right knee, the pain is excruciating. Both on the knee cap, where the knee cap meets the bone on the bottom of the knee, and on both sides of the knee cap. When I try to stand it almost feels as if the bone is broken, once I stand the pain diminishes somewhat until I try to bend the knee to walk down or up stairs.
I am 66. Believe me when I say the doctor I have thru my Medicare Supplement is worthless. He has referred me to an orthopedist who is equally uninterested in the fact that I am constantly in tears from this excruciating pain.
I have to work for at least 5 more years before I can retire. While I sit at a computer for 7 hours, I do have to stand up and walk around the office to deliver documents.
Please help me try to reach the correct type of doctor to find out what to do with this pain, and how to treat the cause.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

I see a rhumatologist.
he injects my knee cap with orthovisc.
knee pain at any age hurts really bad.
my first injury was at age 12 and final couldn't use the knee in 2002. it's been hell!
but www.orthovisc.com those injections gave me back the synvical fluid under my knee cap.
you have to be assertive with your doctor.
TELL HIM-- DON'T ASK
TELL HIM TO PUT IT IN WRITING ON YOUR MEDICAL CHART THAT YOU ARE REQUESTIONG AN MRI FOR BOTH KNEES.
**this is how to make a doctor do things for you!****
the doctor WILL WRITE YOU THE REFERRAL FOR MRI-- if he puts in your chart that you requested it in writing and ask for a copy of your medical records, he will be open to law suit, no doctor wants this!!
MY DAD'S ONCOLOGIST TAUGHT ME HOW TO BULLY MY DOCTOR'S INTO REFERAL'S AND TEST!!
TELL THEM TO PUT IN WRITING THAT YOU ARE REQUESTING A HANDICAP PARKING PERMIT.
TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE REQUESTING THAT THEY PUT IN WRITING IN YOUR MEDICAL RECORDS THAT YOU ARE REQUESTING A REFERAL FOR AN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON.
SAME WITH PAIN MANAGMENT MEDS!!!
if it hurts don't do it!
avoid stairs-- as if you could use them!!
GET A KNEE BRACE THAT HAS A METAL HINGE.
IT REALLY HELPED ME!!

i had to demand it! don't settle for less.
and ask for a copy of your medical records!!

***No doctor, how bad or good they are, wants it in writing that they didn't do what a patient "requested to put in writing" if they refuse your request, TELL THEM TO PUT THAT IN YOUR CHART THAT THEY ARE REFUSING TO REFER YOU OR REFUSING TO ORDER YOU AN MRI ON YOUR KNEE.

I think there might be something wrong the synovial fluid (the fluid inside the capsule of the joints). This is quite a normal situation for the older people as they'd move a lot that the fluid is not so effective as the 'cushion' underlying all the bones at the joint. That is why you can feels as the bone is broken as you so up and pain as you are moving as there is no 'cushion' or barrier between the hard bones.
There are several treatment for it.. you can restore back the fluid by taking few injections at the knee joint or take certain diet that can enhance the synthesis of the content of the joint..
by the way, did you get involve in an accident before that involve the joint??

I have had recurring trouble with a tear in the meniscus in my right knee, that's the material which lines the joint. The pain felt like a cigarette burning under my kneecap and it radiated all around the knee...even a couple of inches above the knee. It also caused a great deal of swelling that never seemed to subside. My doctor told me he might be able to repair it, or remove the meniscus entirely through orthroscopic surgery..
I did not have the procedure done because he said that removing the meniscus would end the pain, but would lead to arthritis in the knee within ten years or so. I had to be very careful not to reinjure the knee and, after about a year, it sdeems to have returned to near normal on its own.
I recommend that you see an orthopedic surgeon, lose a few pounds, and give it time.

I am speaking out of experience. I have a knee injury before, right knee, patellar tissue (felt like on the knee cap and the nerve and bone give me the worst pains especially twitching).
I would like to help.. First, have your MRI (scan for bone and nerve problems), ask your orthopedist.
Avoid salty foods (and those rich with uric acids beans also), worsens the arthritis if you have it (even those on their early 20's can have it due to poor nutrition and lifestyle). Take the right amount of Calcium-Magnesium to supplement your bones and make them stronger (lack of those will make your bones brittle and in constant pain.
And there are lists of knee exercises and posture (like sitting position) you can acquire from your orthopedist and physical therapist and/or occupational therapist.
DO not give up hope, exercise regularly (even though painful especially the first few times you try).
After one hour, make sure you get some exercises like standing up and stretching..
If pain keeps you awake at night and keeps you distracted at work, there are prescribed pain - killers but I kept away from those as much as I could.
Think that you will get better and it will do wonders you won't even believe it happening at first.

This may be a case of patellafemoral syndrome, where the articulation between the knee cap and the end of the femur is not congruent. This is usually more prevalent in women due to our structural differences. Yet, it can also be caused by weakness in one particular part of the quadriceps as well as tightness of the iliotibial band on the outer part of the leg. Pain usually occurs when the quadricpes are required to be active...going up and down stairs, getting up and down from a chair, etc. It also sounds like you need further evaluation to make sure there is not any structural damage such as a torn meniscus. If it is either of the above, your next step in care should be physical therapy where more hands on examination can be done in order to attempt to correct the problem and decrease pain.
