The two main arguments I here from many (not all) Christians is that Christianity provides eternal salvation. With the negative arugment being the alternative if you do not accept Christianity.

What about my life here, while I am living?

dose Christianity help a person be a better human being?
A more contributing member to society?
or dose it only promise what we cannot see.

If it dose promote these things why dont I see more Christian groups saying how Christianty can help you as a person as apposed to saving your soul.

I always get a thumbs down for saying it, - Why does a person waste the life they know they have, trying to have a better afterlife that they can not know exists.

I think that most people at some point in their life consider death. Most religions provide some comforting concept for death, be it the chance to re-live and perhaps be happier or to go to some glorious place to be happy.

Perhaps the more interesting question is why hell? Why should any religion contain an inbuilt punishment for non compliance...

Anyway, we all have our belief systems, be they angels and harps, reincarnation as a billionaire rock star or that earth is round and relativity is still relevant.

I guess for me, I live each day doing the best that I can and hope that if there is an afterlife and some kind of supreme being it will be more concerned about what I intended during my time alive than what I did on a particular day of the week. How can a god reject someone who was kind and good on the basis of a single decision; would anyone condemn Ghandi to hell for not being Christian?

It's you. Christians are typically not obsessed with death and afterlife since we believe we have our salvation and our death is simply a passing into an afterlife in which we have eternal life. There is nothing to obsess about with that. We are actually more obsessed with our lives here and what we and others do while we are all living on earth.

Christianity can help a person be a better human being if the person has a True faith. The thing is that becoming a Christian will change one's perspective on what is contributory to society...we would do that which serves God and His notion of society, and not that which we as sinful humans decide.

The reason you don't see more Christian groups talking about how Christianity can help you as a person is because if you don't understand the big picture regarding salvation and eternal life, and how that relates to serving God, then you won't understand how it can help you be a "better person", because the better person it will make you is in relation to God, and not in relation to a godless perception of what a "better person" is.

For example, humans who are non-Christian see "good works" as those who donate to charity, such as a person who builds a wing of a hospital and puts it in his name. God doesn't see that as contributing to society because the person puts his name on it. God honors the anonymous contributor to society who contributes to please God, not to take credit or show people what he or she does.

So bottom line, being a Christian will help you be a better person but first it will tell you a new meaning of "better person" that what you think that means as a non-Christian.

Hope that helps explain it for you, at least a little.

Death is a natural occurrence for every living thing. We are born, we live and eventually die. No need to be obsessed with it. The afterlife is a creation of the Greek philosophers expounded by Plato with regards to a soul that lives on long after the body has died. It is all conjecture with no solid foundation . Eccl 9:5 " For the living are conscious that they will die, but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all... 6 Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun. When you die, you remain dead until Jesus Christ returns and the righteous are resurrected by him. Your best bet in this life is to fashion your life according to God's will by following his commandments. By following HIS commandments, you as a christian becomes a better person. Love your neighbor, Christ commanded. You become a better person, a better citizen, a better father, brother, mother, sister, etc. God's commandments are all good so you can only expect good results. The reason why you don't see more Christian groups are because they are not really Christian in the true sense of the word. Christ commanded in Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all ther nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit 20 Teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you, and look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things." But instead of doing these things, most religions are money making entities doing the work of the devil than that of God. You Cannot serve two masters, remember?

You just described the purpose to religion. To explain the afterlife, or to at least assure that one exists.

If religion focussed on the present life, every religion would probably be identical to eachother, or pretty damn close (as we all live life as the same species, on the same planet).

To answer your following questions:

Does Christianity help a person be a better human being? - I'm certain that religion helps many people be better human beings as it gives them relative context to their actions in this life.

A more contributing member to society? - Most psychologists would agree that yes, religion (not specifically Christianity) causes a sense of altruism in people. Granted, yes, people can be 'moral' without religion, altruism (selfless acts), usually stems from a belief in an afterlife.

Does it only promise what we cannot see? - It promises a lot of what we cannot see. Once again, read above. This is the purpose of religion.

Why don't you see a lot of Christian groups saying how Christianity can help you as a person as opposed to saving your soul? - Probably because you are judging "Christian Groups" on what you see here on Yahoo! Q&A. Everyone has an oppinion, and you are on the largest network of AMATURE oppinions. Don't take ANYTHING you read here as fact. Most people here, including Christians, more than likely have no education in psychology, sociology, biology, or ethics.

If you believe in God, that alone can help you be a better person. I'm a Muslim, and my religion has helped me better myself, so Christianity isn't the only religion that promotes wellness. We don't know about the afterlife, if there even is one. There's a great fear of what will happen to us in the afterlife, that is why Christians and other religous people are so big on the eternal salvation thing. Christianity does promote to be a better human being, to be a good contributer to sciety, and many other things. Every religion promises what we cannot see. It's all a matter of choice, what do you choose to believe and not believe.

Maybe you should broaden the scope of where you look. If you just read stuff here on Yahoo, then you won't get a real sense of how being a Christian changes lives. God uses His people to help others in many ways. Just think of all the kinds of mission work there is everywhere in the world. Not to say that non-believers don't do good deeds, but you were specifically asking about Christians. Also, Christians experience inner peace and joy in their lives from their belief, which in itself is tied to their salvation.

Because most Christian groups you speak of are not TRUE Christians. They only have the form of Godliness but are wicked and self righteous. They only promote themselves. A TRUE Christian Group will help you as a person but they cannot play the role of God either. God is the only one that can help you with your soul through His Son Jesus Christ. Just being a "good person" will not get you in to the Kingdom of God!! In God's eye's we are all sinful and fall short of His Glory. Being a contributing member of society is good but there is still only one way to receive salvation and that's through Jesus Christ who is our Lord and Savior. There is nothing more important that saving your soul! You should concentrate on that first by giving your life to God through His Son Jesus Christ. If and when you are truly and fully converted then you WILL be a better person because you will be a part of God's family!!

Hmm. I do recall something about "healing the sick, feeding the hungry, comforting the imprisoned, helping the poor", but for the loud ones, it's pretty much pie in the sky when you die.

Seriously, there are many good-hearted Christians who try to make the world a better place in response to Jesus' teachings. But there are also many who see Church as just another country club, with dues, lifetime membership, access to the facilities and no requirement to change their lives. It sems to be the latter who are most interested in justice delayed than justice now.

evidently the afterlife is a necessary element of their ideals. I undergo in strategies years in the past while i replace right into a freshman in intense college, i had to place in writing a paper approximately something that i replace into annoying of. I had at present began thinking my catholic upbringing, and that i wrote approximately being annoying of nothingness after dying. I undergo in strategies thinking that there basically had to be something. It took a rapid mutually as, yet i ultimately grew to alter into mushy with the assumption of no afterlife. So I comprehend why some human beings could be "obsessed" with dying. that's probable confusing to comprehend an atheist's view once you have such solid religious ideals.

The Bible talks about the importance of caring for the poor, the widows, and aliens ( human aliens, not space aliens)submitting to the government and kindness in general. But Christianity isn't something that you 'strap on' to give you a better ride, because benefiting from Christianity is not the point of the religion to begin with.
