you got me, i have delivered babies for 17 years and bred schnauzers for 5 years and i passed on info i received from my vet and i got 2 thumbs down. she asked, i shared, too bad some idiots only think they know instead of actually knowing. i think some people who answer do it to the other answers to better their chances of a best answer.

Because some people are giving an opinion, just to get two points. And it is very clear, sometimes, that they have no clue what they are talking about. And in this category, innocent people and animals can get hurt......when someone gives a stupid answer.
Most people don't realize they are giving a bad answer, however, they are trying to be helpful. But they are answering based on wives tales and myths....not facts and experience.
When it is about dogfood, and people are just giving their opinions, I will give a thumbs down when a person mentions brands of food which are not healthy for our pets. But most people are clueless about this...as dog food is not regulated, and they beleive all the commercials...and the crap dished out by the dogfood companies who looking out for their own best interests ($$$$$$).
When people are asking about help with a dogs behaviour, (as a dog trainer), I know if someone is giving an answer that is a myth, or will aggrevate the problem. So I will give a thumbs down on that. I will give a thumbs up to a small answer that is helpful. Or leave it alone if there is half correct/half incorrect information in the answer.
Also, when they are giving answers that are downright dangerous......a big thumbs down. Most people don't realize when they are giving an answer that is dangerous to a person or a dog.
I agree, that I see some people get bashed for no reason. The other day, someone merely asked about crating advice...and the person got bashed.....being told to give the dog away, don't get a dog again without knowing it.....blah blah blah.
It was all bad advice..people reading things into the question that just weren't there.
I think people get heated up, because they love dogs, and see alot of abuse, and neglect, and animals killed because of overbreeding....and they respond before they read the question clearly.
That said...I think most people on this site mean well....they are trying to protect the furkids...
They just need to stop, and absorb the questions. And read them again after they answer it....to see if the issue was actually addressed.
Of coarse, I am only answering your question in this category....(pets/dogs).
Wouldn't try to elsewhere.
Hope that helped?

You do see it in here a lot. Probably because dog people are VERY opinionated. We all feel that what we believe is right. And no where will you see it more than in a question about breeding. I believe people shouldn't breed unless they are trying to make their breed better. And a lot of people get their nickers in a twist about that. They think they should be able to breed just to let the kids see "the miracle of birth". Ya right. They don't have the right to bring life into the world for that. And they don't take responsibility either. Wow now that I'm TOTALLY off topic! Sorry!
Anyway that's where it happens a lot and we who show will always be at odds with the pet people that don't know what they are doing.
Edit: I will SOMETIMES give a thumbs down if the person is too ignorant or just too lazy to use the spell check. And when they decide to use abbreviations rather than take the time to give an actual answer.

Because people are very passionate about animals...if someone asks something about 'designer dogs', for example, all the people who are more educated about dogs will answer how they are a sham, bred by disreputable people for personal profit & point out it only takes away homes from other mixed breed shelter dogs that will then be euthanized.
This upsets the uninformed people who bought a 'designer dog' under the impression it is a soon-to-be 'new, rare breed' worth oodles of money, so they get mad & give it a thumbs down...rather than researching & finding out they were duped. Refusing to accept their embarrasing folly, they strike out at others to defend their ignorance.
Now, I am sure owners of Puggles, Labradoodles & Malitpoos will all give THIS a thumbs down!

People are extremely opinionated, especially when they are anonymous. Plus, I think that people think of YA as a competition and that giving everyone else thumbs down makes their answer look better.
I answered a question about good breeds of large dogs a few hours ago and every single answer had thumbs downs, even though it was just their personal opinion on what breeds they like. Sometime it is just ridiculous on here.

That's just to show the person asking the question how many other agree or disagree with each answer. When you toss a question out into a public forum, everyone is entitled to an opinion on both the question and the answers given.

I am a professional dog trainer. I have spent years working with dogs and studying the latest scientific info on dog behavior and how to influence it effectively. I have rehabilitated several troubled dogs and continue to try to educate people about dogs' behavior.
When I see bad information (IMHO) being given to people about their dogs, I feel I am doing my best to help the dogs out. When I see information being given to people that I honestly and sincerely believe will lead to increasing a dog's bad behavior instead of helping, I have to say something. Even if it is a thumbs down.
And there is a lot of outdated and mythological informaiton being given about dogs in this forum.

The thumbs down marks on good answers come from all the self-proclaimed dog experts and very biased dog experts (who are even worse) who seem to flock here. It helps them feel important. Places like this draw folks who don't know what they are talking about and gives them a chance to show it to the whole world. This would also explain why this category is a bit short actual information, yet rife with speculation and obvious guesses from folk that make me wonder if they ever saw a dog before.

lol, I like how the question about how mean ppl put thumbs down on honest opinions is in the "dogs" category...pretty fitting.
well, I put thumbs down sometimes if the answer is just totally wrong, even tho I feel bad if someone actually thinks theyre right, but I dont want ppl to get wrong information......other than that, I give thumbs down if ppl are rude or mean.
yeah, ive noticed ppl doing this!!---putting thumbs downs for no reason at all---its DUMB.
