this rather liberal lady told me that that is the average age of weaning in the rest of the world. does that make it right? are they right? what parts of the world does this include?

I have heard that many hardcore pro-breastfeeding people think the ideal age to stop breastfeeding is 4-5 years. I've personally never met one. In "western" culture, breastfeeding itself is often seen as bizarre behavior, forget actually doing it that long. IF I were to continue my child on breast milk that long, I would be pumping after the first year, not directly feeding.

Each culture has a different answer for this and within our American culture there are many answers! Most people panic if a mom nurses beyond 1 or 2 years. After 2 years, a nursing mom will definitely catch a TON of backlash for it, even from strangers. But the World Health Organization technically promotes worldwide breastfeeding until the age of 6 or until the child weans independently. There really is no right or wrong to this question but what the mom and child feel is best for them.

It's debate-able. I believe it is, but it's the most nutritious source for the baby. It is recommended to breastfeed for the first 12 months and mutual preference takes in after that. So it all depends on the person and when they would like to wean their child.

Yes that is way too old. I mean a 4 year old can be in pre-school and what do these mothers do when the child gets home from school ..breastfeed them? Do they drop in at school for their feedings? I think it is crazy for someone to breastfeed a 4 year old that can eat foods like you and me.
I don't care what anyone says i think it is wrong.
