The other answers have covered much of the solution to your problem.

Remember to warm up sufficiently before starting a stretching reigeime. Never push too hard but do progressively increase the intensity of your stretches. Finally note that especially in the split range, that you will be structurally limited to a certain range.

its not exercise that makes you be able to be flexible its actually the opposite if you don't stretch your muscles become tighter. Stretching your legs out before you go to bed and when you get up in the morning will help a lot.

You need to start off with stretching. Then after your body gets used to that, mildly put pressure on the stretches. You can sit on the floor, bend your knees and put your feet together. Hold your feet and gently butterfly your knees up and down. Pull in on your feet, towards your crotch while doing this. This will stretch the muscle in your groin. Go slow and gently increase the pressure weekly.

Get yourself some Pilates dvds or attend some classes. This will get you in shape and very limber.
