Cold sores are herpes, don't poke them or touch them, just wash your hands, you can get over the counter medications for them but there is no cure for them. Do not kiss anybody because it is highly contagious.

Herpes virus is what creates cold sores (aka fever blisters). You could get exposed just from drinking from someone else's cup, used utensils, sharing lipsticks, or by lip contact with anyone that is carrying the herpes virus. The swollen red bumps happen to be considerably sensitive blisters that could surface near the mouth area, or possibly even the inside of your mouth or nose, elsewhere on the face, and anywhere on the body.
They may flare up simply because of increased stress, the common cold, a fever, winter weather, particular foods, or even too much direct sun light. The spot can start to tingle, itch, or burn, and then a blister will appear. The sore will dry up and produce a yellow-colored crusting. They might stick around from seven days to 14 days. An individual could try to mask the cold sore with make-up, however this usually makes the cold sore worse.
To eliminate them, you may consider using a cold sore special product, apply chapstick with SPF 15, use witch hazel, ingest echinacea, vitamins C in addition to E, and absolutely keeping away from pressing the cold sore. Through taking on a few changes in lifestyle, it can be possible to avoid them plus avoid them from reappearing.

Abreva is the best of the over the counter. If you get cold sores often, always have a tube on hand and use it as soon as you feel it coming on. To prevent them always were a lip balm with a high SPF.
About 4 years ago I was getting them about twice a year and it made me miserable. I even went to the doctor for it. He offered two different prescriptions for me to keep in case one popped up. Even with the prescription they did not seem to go away as fast as I wanted. Then abreva came out and I found it to be much better than any prescription. I always keep a tube in the med cab and always wear lip balm with sun screen now and I have not had one in three years.

Abreeva although it's expensive works pretty fast at getting rid of cold sores, so try that if you are willing to spend $15-17 I believe in stores. Herpecin L which is another cold sore medicine works pretty fast too and is less expensive. I hate having cold sores and I have been using that one to get rid of them and I have found this one to work pretty quickly and for less then Abreeva costs.

cold sores have to run their course. There are some liptreatments available OTC, but I have not had much success with them, but they are worth a try. Some people also put on Rembrandt toothpaste...
If you have them often you have to mention it to your Doctor, he may prescibe Zovirax(Acyclovir) which, if you take it right when you feel the sore coming on, will cut the time down to about 4 to 5 days.
Untreated a coldsore usually takes 6 or 7 days to heal.
Hope taht helps .

I REALLY wanted you to know that you can EASILY never have to deal with another horrible, awful, nasty cold-sore for the rest of your life!!
I got them every winter my whole life until 3 years ago (I'm 36 now) and they were the BANE of my existence...the whole process took weeks to heal and would leave a scar for at least 2 months sometimes!
I was reading a message board on www.curezone.org and discovered the PERFECT remedy for both healing them and preventing them completely:
OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
So, I buy the liquid tincture by "HerbPharm" and it has not failed me ONCE...Whenever I'm feeling drained, tired, stressed, or get that tingly feeling on my lip, I just load up on this stuff.
This is the one I buy:
http://www.nextag.com/Herb-Pharm-Olive-Leaf-66659849/prices-html
You can also get Olive Leaf at Whole Foods Market, and other natural food stores....make SURE to buy a quality LIQUID tincture of it...HerbPharm...Gaia...or another good brand.
Very cheap.
The first time I tried it, I was actually halfway into a major eruption and I drank a bunch of the extract in some water.
AS I WAS DRINKING the stuff down, I could feel the swelling on my lip shrinking...I was in such shock--I ran to the mirror--it was shrinking before my eyes and within ten minutes my lip had returned to NORMAL...I began kissing the bottle of Olive Leaf...yeah, I really did!!
I had tried everything in the past...I can't begin to tell you what I went through...and it's now been 3 YEARS since I've had one!!

Acyclovir, but that is a prescription. Take the pills once you feel the sore coming up and it will reduce the postules and the sores will not be as prominent. Use hydrogen peroxide gel and alcohol for drying up the sores faster.

I was having the same problem and my Mom always use to tell me to put baking soda on it, but when I did it now it would just kill and then still be there. So then I tried swishing mouthwash on it for awhile and the pain went away instantly and it didn't come back. So I would try that, seems to work!
