i have long thick hair. when i wash it and let it dry naturally it becomes pretty wavy, but as soon as i take a brush to it, it looks disgusting, frizzy and messy, if i brush it first and then let it dry it looks less wavy and messy. if i blow dry it it dries out and is frizzy and still messy looking. only if i straighten it does it look decent, and after awhile it frizzes out and looks pretty dry. what kind of products could i use (brands would help too) that could help me a achieve either a nice wavy or straight look, the other thing is i use very generic cheap shampoo and conditioner because i'm unsure of which would be best for my hair...any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

i love redken products!!!
they have a great kind of survey that you can take and they will show you which products would be right for you depending on your answers to the questions.
http://redken.com/yourhair/proc.cfm?action=rec_step1
Redken has a great line of products called fresh curls, which helps "control frizz, define and moisturizes curly hair". Within that line is a shampoo, conditionor, anti-frizz scruncing spray, anti-frizz shiner, and leave in detangler.
heres a link to the website:

if your hair is dry i would recrommend using the redken extreme rescue force, I LOVE it!! It is a leave in conditioner that you leave in towel dried hair for 5-15 minutes. It helps to strengthen and moisturize your hair.

some of the redken products could be a little spendy so if you dont want to spend that much i would also recommend pantene pro-v products.
http://www.pantene.com/en_US/index.jsp
they also have a line just for curly hair.

if you would like your hair to be straight make sure you put some type of protection in your hair before blow drying or using a flat iron.
The pantene pro-v frizz control straighting creme works good.

Hope it helped! Good Luck!

First start with pantene pro v new shampoo called texturize. It will give your hair a good strong cuticle to work with and smooth it down (follow with any conditioner you would like) then let air dry as much as possible, while wet put in a texturizer like Paul Mitchell, or if you have a lot of money use Aquage. Then, when dry spray with a hot iron spray (any will do) and hot iron it with a ceramic gold plated hot iron. (Chi is a great brand, but expensive) then follow with Victoria Secret's Very Sexy. If you have the money use the entire line of Victoria Secret's hair products for sleek hair, and buy a Chi hot iron.

I swear by Matrix products. You can use the serums ... or the deep moisture masque. I have wavy hair and if I do not put product in it then it is just WAY out of control!!! Try the smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Hope this helps!!

Hi! I would definitely go on www.herbalessences.com! They have tons of shampoos conditioners and hair products that work great and smell great! Trust me I had a friend that had frizzy hair and she went on line to herbal essences and she found a product that would work great on her and ever since she bought it for her, her hair looks GREAT! I know that you will be happy with herbal essences! I hope that helped! ( I tried a hair product of there's too and my hair curls great than it did before!)

use the garnier sleek and shine system. the serum itself is really good on wet or dry hair and can be used as a protectant before you straighten your hair.
