I would recommend a local thrift shop, sometimes you can find really good furniture like-new. Costco's furniture is reasonable. See if you can get a small credit account and that way you can pay it on a payment plan, and not all at once if money is tight.
Sometimes you can go on ebay and craigslist and find people selling furniture in your local area that are moving or something and sell almost brand new furniture for a real bargain!

In my area the cheapest stores are Value City Furniture and Big Lots for stuff like couches and bedroom sets. For desks, bookcases, tables, etc., Walmart has a pretty good selection.

Check you local paper's classified ad furniture section. Also, I have found some good buys at yard sales. Good luck.

IKEA.

Very cheap and looks good. Plus they not only do individual pieces, but complete room sets at very low prices. Re-did entire living room for 500 including new couch.

ikea.com or you might live near one.
