Certain gases don't let the heat escape from the Earth's surface. It's like putting on an extra blanket or an extra sweater. If you put on a sweater, the sweater does not actually make any heat. It just makes it so that the heat from your body does not escape as easily.
The major natural greenhouse gases are water vapor, which causes about 36-70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth (not including clouds); carbon dioxide, which causes 9-26%; methane, which causes 4-9%, and ozone, which causes 3-7%. It is not possible to state that a certain gas causes a certain percentage of the greenhouse effect, because the influences of the various gases are not additive. (The higher ends of the ranges quoted are for the gas alone; the lower ends, for the gas counting overlaps.) Other greenhouse gases include, but are not limited to, nitrous oxide, sulfur hexafluoride, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons (see IPCC list of greenhouse gases).
Seventy million tons of greenhouse gas DAILY into the atmosphere is nothing to sneeze at.
We are screwing ourselves over for a buck.
Shooting ourselves in the herd.
Stepping on our own ducks.
Cutting off our nose to spite our finch.
Kicking ourselves in the asparagus beetle.
For the almighty dollar we're ruining it for everybody and everything, and people who deny it are three fries short of a Happy Meal.
Have a nice day.

Suggest that you research the change in atmospheric CO2 levels over the last 40 years or so, and compare with the amount of CO2 estimated to be emitted by humankind during the same period. The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics is a good source for data. This is a doable project, with real numbers.

In addition to the above references, here are a few comments on the subject. Green house effect is simply Sun's light rays go thru to the ground, heat the surface, heat radiates back toward upper atmosphere. If a blanket of certain molecules eg CO2 is present the heat is reflected back to earth. An immediate effect can be detected when clouds are present. This tends to keep the surface temp warmer, especially noticeable at night. On clear starry nights this winter in Central CA we have had freezes. But on cloudy nights, it has not frozen and even felt warmer. It happened this way for several weeks this winter.
The question is where does all this CO2 come from that is 'causing' this rise in general earth temp. The enviros state it must be from all the fuel burned on the surface. Others say it is probably a natural fluctuation of the sun -earth interaction.
I am wondering if Jet traffic in the upper atmosphere is not behind it, if it is from burning fuel. Jet engines burn 2000 - 8000 lbs of fuel(kerosene) per hour. Each lb of fuel burned produces 3.66 lbs of CO2 and 1.56 lbs of H2O. Nature does not have an efficient method of removing these molecules from the upper atmosphere. There are thousands of hours of jet traffic every day.
CO2 is absorbed instantly by both oceans water and by growing plants. But plants are dormant for CO2 uptake both in the winter and at night. Plus land only amounts to 15% of the earth's surface. Oceans are 85% of the earth's surface. Colder water takes up more CO2 than warmer, it instantly converts to H2CO3 which buffers to NaHCO3. There is an unlimited sink of CO2 absorption capacity in the oceans.
The gradient for CO2 is downward for the above reasons plus CO2 is heavier than air. But as a gas, it will follow the winds, which are tending down because of the temperatures.
An added side play is, the enviros have a vested interest in having GW man made. The enviros have a history of being sponsored by a segment of American society that want to get rid of Western democratic freedoms as laid out by the Bill of Rights. They have hijacked several areas of government who also have a vested interest in man made GW. They want to create a 'great' new tax as 'carbon credits' and create an even more powerful governmental control over people.
Enviros = environmentalists-hysterical non-scientists.
I could go on, but....... Good Luck!!

Greenhouse gasses like Carbon Dioxide CO2 and Methane CH4 act like the windshield on a car. They allow shortwave/high energy radiation from the sun to pass trough and warm the earths surface but like the windshield on a car the greenhouse gasses trap long wave/heat radiation keeping it from radiating back into space. Without these greenhouse gasses the earth would be, and has been in the past, a giant snowball. As the percentage of greenhouse gasses increases in the atmosphere the earth gets warmer.
Every form of energy commonly used by humans involves rapid oxidation of hydro-carbons which in a perfect reaction would produce CO2 and H2O. The hydro-carbons/oil are made from bugs and plants trapped by geologic processes hundreds of millions of years ago over a period of millions of years. As that carbon became trapped underground, removing CO2 from the atmosphere, the earth cooled. Now as we burn those hydro-carbons we are releasing that trapped carbon as CO2...and the earth will get warmer.

read book called plan b it is very easy to find in the browsers
here are some details to wet your appetite
in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification
in recent times thousands of people have died because of exessive heat, usually old people.in India ,Mexico and France,
deforestation causing desertification, the desert conditions causing very cold nights and scorching hot days
in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert, the globe where they were got to hot for them .
and instead of producing food they are now needing it from some where else, and they will drastically effect the world food prices when they start buying water in the form of grains ,at any cost destabalising governments, in some countries ,could be the result
(are you seeing more Chinese around interested in agricultural lands ,we do here in Mexico)
,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.
collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,
as far as the food production is concerned, Global warming or some of its effects are serious, rising seas result in landloss
each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss
more landloss because of desertification every year,we have less areble land to produce food ,for an extra 70 million people ,
and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing
RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter.
Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,
At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.
SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes
reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
the protection of existing forrests.
stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
recicling wastes,limit water use
