I'm sitting here watching Scream, and thought if Drew Barrymore's character had a cell phone she could have text messaged the cops. But got to thinking... can that be done?

So....Anyone know if it's possible to text message 911? I know my phone and most others have a type of locator on them that can be tracked.

Just curious!

This depends on the equipment your jurisdiction has, it is out there in use but most don't provided this type of service. That goes for your GPS enabled phone too, right now the only info we get (my jurisdiction) is the cell tower's address and/or LAT and LON your signal is bouncing off of.

The hearing impaired have TTY which is similar to a text message but a TTY phone must be used and these are land line phones.

Not in my jurisdiction. Wouldn't calling 911--pushing three little buttons--be quicker than text messaging anyway?? As far as the "locator" on a cell phone, in my jurisdiction we can usually tell the location of a cell phone caller within about 100 ft. Very helpful if the caller's unable to speak for some reason, if there's a bad connection, or if the caller hangs up or the call's otherwise terminated.

your answer will be no at least in my state...i am a 911 operator and u can only be tracked if your phone has gps and the 911 center has upgraded beyong phase 1, but you can still dial 911 and get an operator and even at phase 2 they can narrow your location down to a few feet hope this helped...cute answer kenw25 had i liked that

Last I knew this was not an option, and I was used to be a 911 operator. Maybe one day, but that day is far off.

Umm...if you have enough time to type a text instead of just calling the cop then it is not a true emegency.
