The short answer to this complicated question is that Umbrellas are bigger and LOUDER. An Umbrella would definitely not work in an apartment or with really close neighbors. Umbrellas also have the capability to be more destructive with their larger beak. An Umbrella could chew through a 2' x 4' in less than one day. I hope you are really good at making your own toys or have a lot of money to buy toys with the Umbrella!

Cockatoos are very sensitive, intelligent birds and require LOTS of attention and toys and interaction with their humans. Their lifespan can be long, 50+ years is not uncommon. I cannot emphasise enough that this is a long term committment. Do your research. A good place to start is www.mytoos.com. Also, be aware that all Cockatoos are very dusty birds since they have powder down feathers. There will be dust all over your house and if anyone in your house has allergies it could be a big problem. For the right owner who is dedicated and able to provide for their needs, parrots make wonderful companions!

Umbrella's (especially male) are the most prone to severe, violent moodswings. Not only have I read this, but I've also experienced it. One second they will be cuddling with you can laying on their back getting rubbed, the next they've gashed your hand open for no reason.

I know each bird has their own individual personality, but Umbrella's are a little more umm...hot-headed.

Also, pick up the magazine Birds USA 2007. There's a pretty thorough comparison among the major cockatoos. It might help you with your decision.

I have a goffin cockatoo and she is the most loving and sweet bird I've ever had( I use to breed cockatiels), I've been told that the bigger cockatoos are quite loud, my goffin is very loud and they're suppose to be the quieter ones and if you worry about loud, well there you go. Just my opinion.

Well, from a behavior stand point a umbrella is a pain in rear. They love to screech and are known for they temper tantrums. (Worst than a 2 year old!)

Goffins are escape artists and usually smarter that the people who own them. Goffins also love to be busy and chew up anything that they can get there busy little beaks on.
