ok. i'm in a serious relationship with an active marine and i had to learn to deal with his constant complaining and degrading of soldiers. nowadays, it's something i'm completely used to and it doesn't bother me much any more. actually, now that i've joined navy, my opinion is a little bias as well. anyways, my question is this: do soldiers hold the same grudge with marines? i don't know many people in the army, so i wouldn't know. all i know is that in marine bootcamp they practically brainwash the recruits into putting down army, so i was just wondering if it was similar with the army.

my marine is curently out in iraq on his 3rd deployment. i know perfectly well they don't have their own medics which is why they use navy corpsmen. and when i say "brainwash" i don't mean literally. just that they are all trained to think themselves as the best of the best. trust that there is nothing wrong with "my marine." if there was, everyone (well, near everyone) down in camp pendleton would be in trouble. it's just that they can be stuck up at times. they'll do stupid stuff like walk straight through army ranks while they're all at attention or something like that to disrespect them. and in the end of the day, he'll run into line of fire to save a wounded soldier's rear end. i know it's a friendly competition to them, all i was asking was whether or not the army was the same way or not.

the marines i hang out with in pendleton like to bark 24/7. but when i comes down to it, they all stand by their motto of honor, courage, and comittment to the military and their Corps

OK, heres my experience. I am a former Marine. My MOS school was at an Army post, as was jump school. Out in town, you run into Army dogs. You name call, insult and the like. But when a nasty civilian started trouble, look out. We were all one TEAM, back to back, shoulder to shoulder. Afterward, we sat and drank beer and got shot down by women TOGETHER. Its like having a brother; you can fight each other, but God help the outsider who tries to hurt your brother.

My husband says: Here is the drawn out answer. I'm currently 28 and in the Army. Before I go into the two boot camps you need to understand some of the core differenced between the Army and the Marines. The Army is a force that has many different branches within it. In the army you can serve anywhere from a regular infantry man (grunt), to Field artillery, to a truck driver, to an accountant to a dental technician, to a supply specialist. So in a nutshell what I am saying is that the Army needs to fullfill much more than just regular old grunts. The Marine Corps by comparison technically falls under the Navy. Therefore they do not need to worry about staffing the marines with accountants, dental technicians and the like, they can worry strictly about staffing infantry men, Field Artillerymen and other "combat Arms" professions. (combat arms means the people who directly combat the enemy, rather than those who support those who combat the enemy) So due to this difference the Marine boot camp is definately harder than the Army boot camp, however, Following the Army boot camp you will go to AIT or advanced individual training (remember how you said that the Army's boot camp is 4 weeks shorther this is why). AIT's course length will vary dependant on your MOS (Military Occupational Specialty or your job) but expect to be there a month or more. If you are an Infantryman expect to spend your AIT out doing roadmarches and a host of physical activities, however if you are an X-Ray technician expect to spend your entire time in the hospital etc. I'll spend the rest of the time talking about the army because that's what I know. Overall what job you choose is up to you, and your recruiter, but if you have graduated from college I would reccomend asking the recruiter about enlisting with an OCS or (officer candidate school) option, the responsibilites are greater as an officer, but the pay is MUCH better. Finally when dealing with an army recruiter remember that the army is short on recruits now so you will have a lot of leverage. DONT get bullied into accepting anything you don't want (like a 6 year contract). And remember until you sign your name on the dotted line you can get up and leave at any time (infact leaving might just get you a call back from the recruiter with a better MOS). Good luck!!!

The whole rivalry goes back to the early days of the US. The Army and the Navy wouldn't/couldn't cooperate with each other. There was always a rivalry between them, which basically came down to who would be in command of joint operations. To alleviate this, the Navy created their own "army", the Marines. Navy propaganda being what is, the Marines were touted as "elite", an all-volunteer force that was superior to the conscripted Army.

Another factor is that over the past 100-plus years the Army (and to a lesser extent, the Navy) has attempted to abolish the Marine Corps, the most recent being in the 1947, during the post-WWII reorganization of the armed forces.

Ummm..

I have NEVER heard of anyone ever walking straight through Army ranks while they are at attention. That sounds like a made up boot camp story. Not only would the Army not permit it, the USMC Officers I know are far more professional than that and would not tollerate that sort of childish behavior from their Marines, or even from their recruits.

As a former Army Officer who has worked with many Marines, I can tell you that we respect the Marines for their sense of honor and total devotion to duty. They tend to be really fun people. That being said we (and most older Marines as well) consider the "Hooha, Hooha" stuff you describe to be a little childish.

I send my Marine friends a card on Marine Corps Birthday, or shoot them an e-mail or something, its all fun; like the Army/Navy Game. That being said, The United States Army is made up of adult men and women who are expected to conduct themselves like professional soldiers. We don't need to play silly head games.

First of all,no one is brainwashed. Second you have to look at it like this, are the Huskies better than the Cougars? Those are college teams from the same state. It is friendly. Like the high school you always wanted to beat in football. Next, think about this, whenever you talk to an Army guy what does he say? I was going to join the Marines but.....
Pure and simple, the Marines are more selective than any other branch which is why they are the best. Why do you think the President has control over the Marines and he has to go through generals and such for the army?
Next I would like to point out that the saying is "send in the Marines" again, why do you think that is?
But unfortunately, the Army has been brainwashed into thinking that they are better than the Marines.. Sad Really.
The Marines bootcamp is longer, harder, and they have more training than any other branch out there.
For the other branches the military is a job, for the Marines it is a way of life.

My fiance was in the Marines for 5 years...and lets put it this way...every branch rivals in some way shape or form. The Marines uphold this reputation of being the badasses...my fiance talks crap on all the branches...the army, the navy, and especially the air force....actually he talks more crap on the air force than the army...even my friend who was in the air force for 8 years says its the easiest.

POINT IS...

Marines are brothers...they have a very strong devotion to uphold honor and courage. and they would die for each other. He has been out for 4 years now...and he never has changed since he got out, they are and always will be his brothers. I wish civilian life was like that...maybe this world would be different. and my fiance never does that oorah stuff...its kind of childish.

Service rivalry always has and always will be there...its actually healthy because everyone is trying to be the best. My fiance did 2 deployments with a helicopter rifle platoon and one deployment with the force recon trailer platoon...he said when it comes down to it, and your working with other branches, all that crap goes out the window...everyone works together for a common goal.

To my knowledge, it depends on the person. I think that the Marines are unbelievable tough, give them a job and it'll get done! Same thing for the Army. Such a competition is healthy because they help push for the best. Good Luck and God Speed.

Well speaking as one who had actually been to USMCRD San Diego I can tell you two things.
#1 There is no 'brainwashing'
#2 Marines, being naturally superior to all other forms of life on the planet, spend (or should spend) zero time wasting breath on putting down others as it is beneath their dignity to even ackowledge them.
Your Marine has quite obviously never been in combat, or he would not be running is yap about soldiers and he is just making a fool of himself (and grandstanding for your benefit). When you are in modern combat and you get your cajones in a vice, it is quite likely to be a member of another service that extracts your precious jewels, some Army pukes in helo's or F-16 ANG jockey. And Marines don't have their own medics, for some reason a few misguided Navy Corpsmen constantly are volunteering to ride along with the jarheads and patch their wounds. So basically your boyfriend needs to sit down, shut up, and learn some respect for the other people that wear the uniform of our country!

That's common in every branch of the military. Inter-service rivalry is as old as the armed forces themselves. At the end of the day, it's just a lot of posturing. The individual branches serve different functions and different missions.
