Let's look at one example. Engineers. Engineers account for a great deal of new technology that can help us or protect us. Now taking this to the extreme, imagine if our country became so stupid that we didn't pump out a single engineer. How long do you think it would take for other countries to best us economically, technologically, and militarily? Knowledge is power and that knowledge needs to start getting imparted into our citizens as early as possible to ensure our safety and prowess.

Reference for Teachers helps teachers write student references by allowing them to select from up to ten variants of up to ten sentences giving 10 billion possible references. The sentences are then merged to form a single reference which includes student, teacher and school names and correct personal pronouns. The USA gave returning WWII veterans the GI Bill which let them go to school to get an education.. people complained that our taxes would go up paying for all those people to attend school...
But, as a result we got a better educated population, the demand for colleges and universities increased (which increased demand for even higher education to fill Professor positions).. the people who earned their degrees earned more money so they paid more taxes.. and the national average education level went up.. more research.. more learning.. better schools.. more competition on technical levels.. there were more benefits than most people could foresee when it started.. and we more than got our money back in taxes.
