It sounds as if you press the INSERT key somewhere along the way. Press it again and you should be okay.
The key is towards the upper right on the keyboard.
What happens is this, when you are in INSERT mode, the letters OVR appear at the bottom of the word document - meaning that you are inserting over text you've already written.
What you want is to go back to the default. Do this by pressing INSERT again.

Tab on the "Insert" key to toggle the function. When the Insert key is on, the new text that you type is inserted at the cursor location and the text already in place is moved to the right. When the Insert key is off, new text overwrites the text that is on the screen to the right of the cursor. Most programs turn the Insert key off, and there is usually little reason for the average user to turn it on. There is usually no visual indication of whether the Insert key is on or off.

Hi there.
Ahhs, simple, just press the "Insert" key on your keyboard and you'll be ok. You've just pressed it by accident to enter "overwrite" move and not "insert" mode.
Hope this helps
