How do you meditate? What is it all about?

Yes I do. It's all about calming the mind to allow it to work better, think clearer. Many people meditate sitting or laying quietly, but we can reach a meditative state in a number of ways - doing mindless chores, exercising, etc. An easy way to get started is to lay quietly and count along with your breath. As you inhale, slowly start to count and as you exhale start to count again. Try to make those numbers equal. Try to count longer with each breath, but don't make yourself uncomfortable. Start with a count of 4 or 6 and see if you can work up to 12 or even 16 on each inhalation and each exhalation and see how you feel during and after - then come back and let us know what you think. Don't worry about stray thoughts, and again, don't tax yourself - focus on the counting and see what happens.

I sing HU (an ancient name for God) and do contemplation instead of meditation. Contemplation is what you might call active meditation in that you direct your own thoughts instead of just emptying the mind.

Quiet the mind. No talking or thinking. Most people cannot do so. That is why they say it won't work. But it does. I do it everyday. Think one specific thought if you have to, i.e., how it would feel to be a tree, etc....Nam, myoho, rengay, kyo. I am not sure how to spell those words, but you do get the idea. Just 10 minutes a day. Chant those words.

about calming the mind. focus. discipline. self analysis. read some books. you'll find few good answers here.

first you need to learn how to breathe. how to sit.
