Do you keep enforcing their areas that nobody should touch and what to do if the problem happens? Teach them not to do drugs and drink? Have a secret passwod in case there is a need for it? Tell them not to go with anyone without your permission? What is the most important teaching a child should have from birth? So many parents do not think of teaching their children concerns that happen in the real world. My hope with this question is that your child gets one more bit of help to stay safe. What do you want your child to know?

I have taught all 3 of my boys that if they are ever touched in a way that makes them uncomfortable at all, their job is to tell me, and my job is to get it stopped. And if they can't tell me, for whatever reason, then they keep telling people until someone listens. Their father is an alcoholic and they know this and none of them have any interest at all in drinking, even the 19 year old. We have one-on-one chats fairly often where we talk about all kinds of stuff and I ask them if they've ever tried drugs, they have been approached in school, but have not partaken. We do have a password they know if anyone other than myself or a family member needs to pick them up. They all know that if at ANYTIME for ANY reason they need a ride home from somewhere, all they need do is call and I will be there with no questions or recriminations. It makes me sad to have to teach them all this, but it would shatter me if they were harmed by not knowing any of it. But I agree with the others also, my boys know that they can, (and boy oh boy they DO) tell me anything, but the most important thing they know is that they are loved unconditionally.

That's right granny. We need to teach our kids to be safe. I live in a dangerous neighborhood, and if I don't know where my children are 24/7 then I go berserk. But I also tell my children there is danger everywhere, and to trust their instincts. One of the best lessons a parent can teach their child, is to teach them to be safe.

We wanted them and we love them dearly.

I think the other stuff is crucial, like manners...but if I died tomorrow, I would think that the love was what mattered most.
