Why do u even have a dog if ur going to leave him outside in a cage ??? My God, either get the poor dog a good home or bring him inside where he belongs. A small dog with short hair can not tolerate 40 degree temps. You r much bigger than ur dog, could u tolerate sitting outside in just ur house clothes in that temperature range ??? I think not, why do u expect ur dog to do so. If u do it, don`t be surprised if someone calls the humane society to report you.

Common sense would say: yes!

I personally would not keep any dog outside during the winter months, especially not a smaller dog like a rat terrier. You are lucky he has not suffered from hypothermia. There is no reason he has to be caged outside. Get a crate for inside if you don't already have one.

Yes. In case you didn't know, that is just two wee degrees above freezing point. Plus, not all dogs can adapt to the cold that easily. Unless it has a big coat and was born to live in hard conditions, don't count on that terrier to survive in the weather.

Good luck keeping it inside though!

Yes, it is too cold. He is small and rat terriers don't have enough hair to keep them warm in that kind of weather. I have Jack Russells. They wear a coat to go outside to potty in that kind of weather. It wouldn't work to leave them out in the coat though because they would just take it off and then freeze to death. :)

Would you want to be left outside in 40 degree weather?

Probably. Rat terriers have such short hair and they get cold easily...mine wait until the last minute to go out to potty whenever it is below 50 degrees. Why not put him/her in a kennel in your home while you are out? Your rattie will be comfortable and safe.

Yes. He's too small and does not have enough fur to keep him warm, and a cage does not protect him from the elements. He'd need a heated doghouse if you were going to leave him out for any length of time.

Of course it is too cold...Not only that, but no matter what time of year it is you shouldn't leave your dog out in a cage. Put a collar around your neck and put yourself in the cage instead...see how you like it! He is a small dog..like a baby size...would you put a baby out in that kind of weather!?? God, I hope not.

If your dog is in a cage, you have no right to put him outside. Leave him in the house in his cage or let him be free in the yard. At least he'd have a chance to run around to keep warm.

Worst case scenario - if you ABSOLUTELY had to, put the dog in the garage (wihtout cars so he won't get poisoned from exhaust fumes) with a warm doggy bed that is off the floor - or has sufficiant padding. They even sell heated beds and blankys for dogs. I know many people may know that 40 isn't horrible - but it also depends on the dog........ Please please please don't do that to your dog?

Seriously.

Thanks for hearing me out.

i does no longer pay interest to any of the comments that say he would not belong exterior. Jack Russells originate in England the place the temperatures are frequently chilly & icy. additionally they have too plenty means to be saved indoors all day & can exchange into extremely unfavorable in the event that they alter into bored. I actual have 2 Jack Russell domestic dogs, male & lady, the two in basic terms 6 months previous. for the duration of the day whilst i'm at paintings, they're left exterior with foodstuff & water, lots of toys & a severe high quality heat crate to sleep in decrease than hide from rain or sunlight. I additionally take place to stay in Canberra the place maximum mornings, throughout iciness (that's now), the temperature would be decrease than 4degrees, so extremely chilly & frosty. My domestic dogs are happy to be exterior, except that is mattress time. in fact if I deliver them in they scratch on the door to get out! Do your analyze on JRT. maximum respectable web pages will inform you that they do no longer seem to be indoor canine. except of path that is to sleep at evening. The extra you depart them interior, the fewer they gets used to different temperatures exterior =)
