If an American citizen travels to a country where the drinking age is lower than 21, does he or she still have to be 21 to drink or can he or she drink at that country's legal age? For example, can an American drink in London at age 18 (England;s drinking age)?

Also, are there any Americans out there that have actually done it?

Sure can, exciting huh? You're traveling overseas, right? Lucky you :) So long as you are the legal drinking age in the country you're currently in, then you can drink yourself silly - legally! In Australia the legal drinking age is 18 if you're interested.

Yes. The bars and restaurants follow the laws of their own country, not every country the various tourists come from. Many countries in the world have lower drinking ages than 21.

You can drink, because America has no part in that. However, if you are there as a "sex tourist" there are laws (e.g. PROTECT Act of 2003) that can put in jail.

But since you probably aren't going there for that specific reason and all you are going to do is drink, there is nothing the U.S. can do unless the state/territory is owned by the U.S.

In the meanwhile, have FUN!

You can drink at whatever the legal age is in the country you are visiting.

Of course!

I've always wondered why Americans can't drink until they're 21 . I suspect that is much distrust and disrespect for the young which a sort of prejudice.

You can definitely drink in a country if you are legal age there. It doesn't matter what the law is where you come from, you followthe law in the country you're in.

You just have to be the legal drinking age for the location in which you will be drinking the liquor.

To answer your addendum, yes, I have done it, in Canada, Japan, and Australia.

I went on a cruise even as i became 18 and drank. It became considered international waters. i have not heard of the type of regulation yet you are able to genuinely verify. in basic terms google the rustic you're going to . If a guy walked in to my bar and he became 21 i'd serve him. inspite of if his u . s . reported he had to be ninety 2 to legally drink. Peace to you this evening, D
