zen deals with this question a lot. I would recommend finding some introductory books on zen.
Personally, Ive found that one cannot "overcome" the mind, it is the resistance and struggle to "mind" that causes frustrations. Better to acknowledge beastly thoughts and feelings as "clouds drifting by in the sky." There they are...there they go.

Hippocrate - the great Greek philosopher said, "Let food be thy
medicine and medicine thy food". That sums it up all.
Food makes you or mars you. So to curb these beastly tendencies of the mind switch over to natural diet for a period of
one month or two and you will see dramatic change in your
psyche. In fact you will be so amazed wondering - so easy why
it didn't occur to you.
The regimen is as follows:-
As soon as you get up in the morning after brushing your teeth
drink two glasses of water so that you have a clean motion. This
is very important. Now for breakfast have two/three varieties only
of citrus fruits. For lunch a large bowl of salad as follows:-
(the most ideal way is to consume whole vegetables after thoroughly cleansing it with warm salted water and then rinse with plain water) Grate carrot, radish and cucumber/cabbage
(don't go for more varieties) for topping it use one teaspoonful of
olive oil plus one teaspoonful of honey plus one teaspoonful of
fresh lemon juice. Beat these three together with a large spoon
and pour it over the grated salad. Add one tablespoonful of
sprouted green mung and few chopped coriander leaves
For supper eat sweet fruits such as mangoes, sapota, bananas
along with few dates/figs (soaked minimum for 3 hours and
maximum 12 hours) In between if you feel hungry keep drinking
water and if you still find gnawing hunger troubling you then only
go for fruits or vegetables only. Avoid any cooked or baked
products. If you are obese person you will loose weight and if you are the thin type just try to increase the quantity of the
natural food you eat and everything will balance out.
Now learn to hold one mudra (mudra is an art of communicating
with mind using finger gestures) which all your gods and
goddesses hold i.e. GYAN MUDRA . This will go a long long way
to curb the so called beastly tendencies of the mind. The mudra
is to be held for 45 minutes in a day. You can either hold it at a
stretch or break it into three parts of 15 minutes each. If you are
obese you can hold this mudra for more than 45 minutes but
if you are the thin type then please do not exceed 45 minutes
time barrier as it tends to increase the vata tendencies.Go ahead and report on this site after 2 months. Holding mudra is no
big deal but changing eating life style requires guts. I am sure
if you want to deal with mind the dramatic way then going
natural is the best way. Good Luck.
