i have a new kitten that is abot 5 months old that I got from the Animal Protective League about a week ago. Today I noticed that in the corner of one of her eyes it looks watery and is discharging slowly a brownish looking fluid. It is not alot but it is not clear like the other eye. After time, it will leave a dry brown residue that I originally thought was what I call , 'eye boogers".
Could there be some infection that my kitty has?

Yes especially if it came from a shelter. I worked as an animal health tech at the ASPCA. Your kitten has what is known as "kennel cough". All it really means is that it has an upper respiratory infection (a cold to you and me). Since its only been a week since you adopted, call the League up and let them know. They should be able to treat the infection there with some oral antibiotics since they gave you an animal that was already sick. If they do not, ask them what their policy is about taking a new animal to the vet. They sometimes cover some of the cost. After a few days on antibiotics, you will begin to see improvement. For the mean time be sure to wash your hands every time you handle it because it is very contagious to other animals.

There are many viral agents that cause this in cats, and it's quite common in cats that began as wild or rescue cats. Often, the vet will give you an antibiotic eye ointment to keep on hand for flare-ups, the ointment makes the eye feel more comfortable and keeps a secondary bacterial infection from setting in. Similar to cold sores in people, these viruses flare up from time to time, and you treat it as it crops up. Stress can cause it to flare.
It could also be that his eyelids are rolled in a bit, or an ingrown eyelash, or maybe a blocked tear duct. Tears will turn brown with time, they oxidize when exposed to the air. And all three of these will cause excessive tearing. For the most part, clear to brown discharge is no biggie. But if it turns yellow or green, that needs attention right away.
The sneezing goes with the viral infection too. Have it checked to be sure, but it's very common and usually not serious.
Kennel cough is common in dogs, but rare in cats. Kennel cough also cannot be transmitted on your hands, it's an airborne disease, you have to breathe it in to be infected. And it only travels 10-12 feet when someone barks or sneezes, which is how it spreads through a kennel so rapidly, and that's how it got its name.

I could be an upper respiratory infection. There are other possibilities as well, so you should make an appointment to have her eyes checked by a vet. If it is an upper resp infection, they can perscribe antibiotics that are safe for cats and it should clear up.
Keep in mind that upper resp infections are contagious, so if you have other cats, be sure to let the vet know. It is not contagious to people or dogs, however. Just cats.

you might want to take the kitten to the vet. there could be a couple of things going on. the vet will probably give you an ointment to put in her eye. and use a warm wet(not dripping) wash cloth to get the boogers out.

I think you need to contact the League and tell them what is going on. You adopted the cat with the presumption that it was in good health, and this doesn't seem to be the case. They should have a vet who can see the cat; it should be at THEIR expense, however, not yours.

I do not think so because of the way you are describing it. Just keep a watch, if it gets worse take him to a vet.
