I read an article a while back that mentioned that the supplement "L-Lysine" is a source of relief from shingles. I can't remember the article name or location. However, maybe if you do some research you can find it.
This is an article I just found. http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsSupplements/Lysinecs.html
Hope this helps. My grandpa gets shingles in his legs and he is always in pain too.

I think there is a vaccine/treatment for this - don't be fooled into thinking that a vaccine is only to prevent disease either - some modern vaccines are effective against infections now. Consult a doctor too. Shingles is Human Herpesvirus type 6, so that will determine the medication. This is NOT the same as genital herpes, in fact, its the adult version of chicken pox. Get some rest in the meantime.

How LYRICA Works
LYRICA was designed specifically to treat 2 of the most common types of nerve pain. LYRICA works within your body to calm the damaged nerves that cause pain. It can reduce the stabbing, burning, and shooting symptoms of Diabetic Nerve Pain or Pain after Shingles.

LYRICA Takes Aim at the Source of Pain
LYRICA was designed to treat your specific kind of pain. LYRICA works by reducing the number of “extra” electrical signals that are sent out from damaged nerves in your body. By calming the extra electrical signals in your nerves, LYRICA can help you become more comfortable. That’s why LYRICA is able to give many people relief.

To relieve pain, the doctor may recommend over-the-counter analgesics (pain-relieving drugs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen, or prescription drugs, such as indomethacin, all members of a class of medications known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Acetaminophen is also commonly used to relieve the pain. If pain is severe, doctors may add stronger analgesics, such as codeine or oxycodone.
Google "shingles" and you'll find many sites.
But it is always best policy to ask your doctor first.

See your doctor IMMEDIATELY!!!! There exists some kind of shot that is given at the base of the neck that can get rid of them within a week and prevents you from having to take those pills every four hours, even during the night, for months, possibly years! We thought my father was having a heart attack when he developed the pain. We convinced him to go to the ER and they thought it was his heart, too. Naturally, the tests came back negative. They were just about to discharge him when the rash developed. If he hadn't gotten that shot, he wouldn't have had them for a long, long time. Good luck!

Try tea tree oil. You can find it at Trader Joe's at a health food store or on the Internet. Be careful if you buy from the Internet it can be very expensive. It should not cost you more than about $5.00. Good luck!
