Animal shelter FTW!
Just go every saturday for a few hours, and he'll have the hours necessary in no time, and have a blast doing it.

I would suggest working through your local volunteer center. Volunteer centers provide quality, screened volunteer opportunities that can be one-time, short-term, or long-term events. They also specialize in matching your interests with some of the unique community needs and typically work with a wide variety of non-profit agencies.
Here are some links to find your local volunteer center:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
As a community non-profit agency, your volunteer center can also provide you with the appropriate paperwork needed for school as well.
Good luck!

If 10% of the average $907 that Americans spent on Christmas gifts went to children in need, 42 million children could be helped for an entire year according to statistics provided to me during an interview with World Vision.
This year, I conducted an experiment, and asked for donations to World Vision and Heifer.org instead of Christmas gifts. Many folks simply chose to give me gifts anyway, but many did make donations instead, resulting in $137 going to these charities.
I also have a website where I sell art to support these two Christian organizations. The next time you need art for your walls, please consider my website. My personal favorite of my own work is Sunset over Florence12. Recently my aunt (an amateur photographer) and a friend have donated some of their work for this charitable cause, as well. If you know artists who might wish to join this charity model, please send them my way.
There is a set of 6 world maps on my art for charity website that represents the state of our world in terms of poverty, hunger, disease, education availability of electricity and longevity. You can get a full sized copy for your office or child from my website.

Ummm...what does he like to do? Are there any special community events planned? He can help out with a school activity or join a group. Or he can help at the humane society, food shelf, library, nursing home, etc.

Perhaps he would like to visit the feeder primary school for the intake of next years pupils to his high school and give them a guided tour of their new school and be available for a few weeks before hand for questions and answers type thing. New pupils have fears and it may help for the older pupils to re-assure them.
