There is no particular breed, but get a feel for the traits in a dog you prefer and the ones you do not. If you do not like excessive amounts of shedding, then a Newfoundland is probably not the dog for you. If you like large but short haired dogs, then maybe try a dane. Basically, go to a shelter or look on adoption websites and see how they act and if you like what they do or not. The bast way is to meet a dog and spend some time with him/her.

Also, make sure to get a vet to check the dog when you get it. They can tell you if the pet is prone to getting hip dysplasia, bloat, or any other orthopedic issues

depends on what you're looking for in a dog:
how often can you walk it/give it excersize?
how big is your yard?
are you wanting a breed known to be friendly with people/other animals or more of a guard?

we have a staffy (staffordshire terrier) crossed with mastif or boxer or something (she's LARGE for a staffy). she's great- staffy's are people dog (she follows us every move we make). she loves everyone who comes in our house or people we meet on the street. she's very flexible with the amount of exercise she gets (staffy's are happy with a couple small walks a day or going for 10km runs but if you run them, they will expect it regularly).
staffy's generally aren't great with other animals though (ours was a rescued dog and has had bad experiences in the past with other dogs and is now aggressive with them and people have told us that generally that breed is known for not liking animals).
another great breed is dobermans. my partner had them growing up and they were very lovable dogs that often were wimps (i.e. the cat was boss over the dogs, they were scared of small dogs...)
best to get a dog from a shelter too, not a breeder. give a needy dog a home. there's often young dogs placed in shelters if you want to start from puppy

There are SOOO many big dogs in shelters! While people are always looking for small dogs, many of the big-fellas get ignored. You'd be doing both yourself and homeless animals a great service if you went the adoption route. By adopting you can get to know potential pets for the fabulous, vivacious individuals that they are, finding one whose personality and physical qualities are unequivocally perfect for you too!

Some of my favorite large breeds of dogs are:

Labrador Retriever, Boxer, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky and the Irish Setter.

Be sure to research the breed you decide to get because all of the dogs I have suggested are prone to many major health problems (e.g. hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cancer etc.).

Sleek haired:
Doberman Pinschers
Great Danes
Boxers
American Bulldog
Mastiffs (Neapolitan, Cane Corso)

Not-so-sleek:
St. Bernards
Newfoundlands
Rottweilers
German Shepherds
Mastiffs (Bull, English)

Golden Retrievers stink - literally. They are known for that gross "doggy odor." They also shed like crazy!
Labs aren't all they're cracked up to be, they have obesity problems and ti's hard to find a good breeder since they are so incredibly common.
