I kind of know where you're going with this. I think they internally rationalize their behavior. The devil made them do it. It's the way God made them. It was just one time. Etc.
I also think they rationalize how God views it......"I'll be forgiven if I accept Jesus" or "It's not my fault, I was born to sin...etc."
As an agnostic.....I view it as simply they are harming society, society has a duty to protect itself from men like them. I also think society has a duty to attack, legally, every person in the hierarchy who protected these men.

actual, the Bible is examine every day of the twelve months in hundreds international. There are 4 (sometimes in basic terms 3) readings from the Bible in each and each Mass. First analyzing is an previous testomony analyzing, then a Psalm, then a clean testomony analyzing (no longer a Gospel analyzing), and ultimately a Gospel analyzing. The Mass is split into 2 important components, the Liturgy of the be conscious (while the Bible readings are examine), and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. for the duration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, element of the final Supper is recited via the priest, Matthew 26:26-28. this is, in accordance to Catholic theory, while the priest consecrates the bread and wine into the Holy Eucharist. throughout a era of three years, the whole Bible is examine interior the Mass. Mass is asserted on a regular basis in each u . s . of the worldwide. there's a three twelve months scriptural cycle (I forgot the call of this cycle, if any). in case you circulate to Mass every day for 3 yrs right away, you have gotten heard the whole Bible, previous testomony and New testomony. Do Catholics examine the Bible? interior the Mass, sure, on a regular basis. In private, many do. It relies upon on the guy. in the previous Vatican II, Catholics weren't inspired to verify the Bible as much as they're at present. in recent times, sure, Catholics are very plenty inspired to verify the Bible on a regular basis. genuine! i became a non secular Catholic from 1987 to 2000. Bible analyzing became inspired very plenty.

For a while the Church was not as stringent in accepting men to the priesthood as the Church should have been. It became lax because of the priest shortage.
Now, even though Pope John Paul II put those stringent guidelines back into effect, men or questionable moral character have accended into power-positions within the Churhc heirarchy.
Obviously, we all now know that the Church would have been better off with fewer, but far more morally straight , priests.
Do not discount the young men coming into the priesthood now. In a few decades they will be in power positions and the Church will be better because of it.
This is a time of clensing in the Catholic Church. Tares of the Clergy have mixed with the wheat of the Clergy. The tares are being weeded out. In time, the clergy will regain the moral highground.

I think everyone is human with a sin nature and even a priest or strong Christian can be tempted to sin just like everyone else. It doesn't mean they didn't believe in their faith, but just took their eyes off of God for a moment and allowed sin to control them instead of the Spirit. Christians are expected to live a perfect life, when they are still just as human as the non-christian. I believe those people have issues if they are messing with children and they shouldn't be in a leadership role, if they can't control themselves in that way.

Your title question is hard to understand.
Anyways those priest could very well believe in Christ till this day b/c the reason they committed those sins doesn't have to do with lack of belief.
Instead they were driven by an unnatural desire.
Child molesters have an intense desire to sleep with children or they wouldn't do it. However they know it's wrong and the knowledge of the harm there committing is what should stop them from doing it and not the fear of punishment.
People who don't commit harm purely out of fear aren't exactly good people. There just afraid.
Love is what should stop you from committing harm and make you do good.

How could they possibly not know that what they were doing was wrong,
As for joining the clergy to get near to children i doubt it,
My guess is they had a moment of weakness(when confronted with a childs perfection????),this may have become all consuming and maybe habit forming.
Maybe these people feel the need for a fix.

Unfortunately, I think it is a mix of both. I think that some people honestly know that what they are doing is wrong and they know they shouldn't do it and that it is a sin and God will punish them because of it and yet they do it anyway. And then there are people who get in this service because they know young children will be around and they know that they will be trusted......It's very sick and sad!
Good rule of thumb though: Don't leave your children ALONE with anyone! Keep your eyes and ears open. You can NEVER be too careful these days.
God bless!

I think that pedophiles come from all religions and all groups in society.
Sure, I think that the ones who happen to be Christian can genuinely believe all the Christian mythology and theology, while still being pedophiles (attracted to children.) Sadly, they can rationalize in their own minds why it's okay for them to molest children...as far as I am aware, the Bible does not specifically prohibit child molesting.
However, civil society forbids it. Somehow, pedophiles come up with twisted, convoluted reasons why it's okay for them to go against the laws, go against any religious ethics that forbid hurting other people, and molest children.
I really don't think religion has anything to do with it one way or the other.

I think they were in a pre-salvation state. They haven't yet confessed Jesus Christ their Lord & Savior. And they didn't have heart faith in the atonement for their sins and didn't have heart faith in the resurrection.
Many will stand before Christ (after this life on earth) saying "Lord, Lord, I did this & that in your name...".and Jesus will tell them "Depart from me. You workers of iniquity. I never knew you.".
Jesus never knew them because they never actually were born again. They may have a religious title, or say they are Christians. And have done this and that, in Jesus name. But Jesus knows His sheep. Jesus warned of hell fire to those who abuse the little ones who believed in Him.
It is impossible for those born of God to abide in sin (make it a comfortable habit) because of the Holy seed within. (1-3 John) A born again Christian would not be able to habitually molest children. If they tried to abide in this type of sin, God would take them home early (heaven), if need be.
Devoted to Jesus is what one is when they obey Him.
Child molesters hate God. They have idols in their life. The iniquities (including sexual) are passed on to the 3rd & 4th generations of those who hate God. (Exodus 20).

Good question. I think it would vary based on individual cases.
A common error, especially in this forum, is black-and-white thinking. A person can do terrible things and still be good in some ways. I believe everyone, even child molesters, has some good in them.
