This vehicle does not have a Passenger Presence System (PPS)
Which means if the drivers Airbag Module Inflates, so will the Passenger.

You will need to talk to Pontiac and police investigators, but I think you will find one of the following
1. In early airbag technology when the drivers went off, the dash unit did also - no separate set of sensors. 1998? don't know.
2. Many people defeat the alarm about fastening the seat belt that occurs when heavy objects are put on the passenger seat (the weight making the system think the seat is occupied) by fastening the belt across the passenger seat. If it is fastened, the bag might trigger even if there is no weight on the seat.
3. Depending on the force of the accident, it might go off in any case.

The airbag sensor can not tell how many people are in a car, they just blow ALL of the bags they are suppose to, be it front or side impact airbags.
It is also a good way to get another $700 EACH out of a repair for replacing replacing more airbags.
