Personality will vary even if they are the same breed. Get a dog that you think will match your dog's personality better. With the right introduction, all dogs can be made to live together happily. They might not be the best of friends if they are really uncompatible, but they can learn to accept each other.
If your dog is very friendly, try not to get a dominant dog. When you are picking your dog, look at its parents and see what their temperment is like.
Also look into adopting a dog from a shelter. The people at the shelter will tell you how well the dogs do with other dogs. Plus, you are doing something nice by giving a dog a good home! Good luck!

Whether two dogs will get along depends on their individual personalities, not their breed type.
Patience and sensitivity to their behavioral cues during the introduction will be key to success. I'd suggest going to a shelter, finding a dog you like, and then bringing your Maltese to meet that dog one-on-one. If they get along, perfect! If not, determine whether you're willing to work through their problems or consider a different dog. Rest assured, with enough time and effort virtually any two dogs can get along (or at least tolerate each other).

I found a lot of good information on puppyfinders.com. Has listing of all breeds and ranks different breeds on how they get along with other dogs. Also tells you about each breed.
Another thing to ask yourself is if your current dog is a dominant dog or submissive. If its a dominant dog, it more than likey will not accept another dog in your house. Before purchasing another dog, have your chosen one introduced to your current one.
Jealousy will come into play, but please stop it before it esculates.
I currently own a yellow lab and got a Rat Terrier. It was rough at first, but not after having my Rat Terrier for 9 months, they get along like sisters. My lab was submissive and my terrier is very dominant. I tried to get a second rat terrier, but my other one wouldn't have it.
Good luck and I hope everything goes well if you get a second dog

Most Yorkie's don't really get along with other dogs. So you probably shouldn't get a Yorkie.

I think they'd be fine, just make sure if it's a male and female they are both fixed or you might have a little unwanted "relationship" between them and end up with a litter of puppies.
