Because you're dealing with children all day, and it's good to know what makes them tick and what they can/can't think of on their own (what's developmentally appropriate, etc.).

to know the cognitive development and maturity processes the youth go through...it's important for teachers to understand that so they can better help the students as a group and individually. i'm currently taking adolescent psych...it is a bit boring. plus my teacher's a jerk

there are many problems with the children today. Each child is unique and different. Just are we carry baggage with us each moment of the day, so does a child. It truly help to understand what maybe hindering a child from his/her best work.
