I have a 12 yr old Min Pin and have had her since she was 3 months old. About a year and a half ago she started urinating at night while we were sleeping. Soon after she starting doing this (every night) I purchased a crate and placed her in it only during the time that I was sleeping. She started urinating in the crate. I took her water dish away during the night, thinking this would help to eliminating her need to urinate, only to have her wake me up barking because she was thirsty. In the past she has never been a big drinker and she has had accidents here and there, but never this consistently. I took her to the vet and had urinalysis and a blood test and the test were neg for anything that would have contributed to this behavior. The vet was not sure what was wrong with her and gave me a supplement to give her twice a day, which didn't help. There has been no change in her routine, no new pets or disturbances and I let her outside between 5-6 times a day. Please help!

It sounds like she is incontinent. This is not unusual for older dogs. I had a MinPin that was incontinent and since her tail was docked, I was able to put her in regular baby diapers. It worked great! There is medication that helps the muscle control. I would ask your vet about it.

Incontinence happens with age.

She is probably as embarrassed as you are confused. After all she has been able to control her bladder all her life and has associated indoor accidents with nono. If she is peeing where she sleeps this means she has a problem. That is just not what a healthy young dog does.

Adults can have surgery for this, I do not know about dogs. Ask your vet. He should know this rather than have you pay for expensive tests. This is common sense if nothing shows up in the tests. Bodies wear out and your dog is not a puppy.

Phone a local breeder for Min Pin and see if this is a common problem for older dogs and ask how they handle it.

I know it sounds funny but there are available from many places doggie diapers. I do not joke.

Just an idea.

Good luck. Poor baby is just aging. It happens to all of us.

If your vet couldn't find anything, it could just be because she is getting older. They make doggie diapers so you might try them. My little guy is between 11-14 years old. He was a rescue dog and always went outside. Now, he has accidents. When we get older, we have to go a lot more than we used to and our bladders can't hold as much. Try letting her out more, and remember to praise her when she goes outside. Try spraying something that will get rid of the urine smell so she won't go to the same spot. You may have to get the training pads to lay around the house. Be patient with her. One thing I did find is that on days that I've been extremely busy, maybe I didn't pay my dog as much attention as I normally do, and he gets a tad upset with me. So, I spend a little more time with him the next day, and he's fine. One day we will all be there, and I hope that whoever takes care of me doesn't decide to put me down because I have accidents!

She is getting older and maybe does not have the bladder control that she had when younger. It happens to everyone, dogs too. Don't take the water away, she needs that. Maybe she wakes up in the night and needs out, but you are asleep and don't hear her or she doesn't want to bother you. Poor thing. Maybe instead of putting her in a jail (crate) and making her feel bad, you could get a litter box and teach her to use it at night.

Just as when people get old, dogs have to go to the bathroom more often in the middle of the night. She probably just can't make it through the night without going outside to go to the bathroom. Try getting up and letting her out once or twice a night, perhaps when you get up yourself to use the bathroom.

your vet needs to perform an ultra sound to be absolutely sure there are no tumors in the kidneys. My 4.5 yr old dog started to unrinate out of the blue, ps he is now in dog heven. Huge tumor in his one kidney and it was too late, the tumor spread to cancer in his lungs. Xrays showed nothing. Boy was that a mistake. Get an ultrasound and make sure you have pet insurance. It helps

She might not be able to help it, older dogs loose control sometimes, most people put them to sleep at that time or purchase dog-dippars for them. If it's her age then she can't help it, if you never had a problem before then it's her age. I'd suggest trying to get dog-dippars.

Sounds like she's just old and has lost control of her bowels. I'm so sorry. It might be good to get her a diaper or to consider the humane thing to do.......you know what I mean, but I don't want to say it. I'm sorry.
