New York City is very expensive, not just for the rent and/or purchasing but smaller items you never thought could BE more expensive... like milk! Even the other boroughs are getting more expensive to live in just because of the location. Brooklyn or Queens are going to be a good bet for you. Most people with jobs that pay 40K+ still end up living with roommates in the city just because it's that expensive. If you want to rent, I would try to arrange for a roommate. If you are looking for something more spacious, don't live in Manhattan. There are going to be parts of Brooklyn which are great ideas because they are about an hour or less away from the city itself by train and/or car (however, I wouldn't even recommend owning a car in the city if you are looking out for your wallet... gas, parking, insurance prices are ridiculous and will cause you extra stress). Look into lower Brooklyn areas like Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Park Slope, Bed Stuyvesant and Midwood. These areas are all accessible to the city by train easily and are actually safer than downtown areas in Brooklyn (even though they are closer, for some "out of towners" it could be a very drastic change) -- New York is a whole different planet for some people so this would make for a smooth transition. I would recommend having a job already set up if you don't have more than $5,000+ is savings because with deposits and rent and moving expenses, you may not be able to make the move. New York is notorious for "flip-floppers" (e.i. people who don't pay their rent, move a lot, skip town) so when they say put down a $1,000 deposit... they mean it and with good reasoning. I would also recommend cutting down on what you own before you move there because chances are you'll be moving into a MUCH smaller living area. If you are getting a job that pays anything below $14/hour, more than likely you'll have a roommate for sure unless you are well off. Than by all means, spend away. Because it's one of the most diverse, exciting cities in the world. You can meet people from everywhere, find any kind of food you want at the drop of the hat. World class musuems and entertainment, easy public transportation system, cheap flights to the rest of the world and it's become a VERY safe place to live.
Only down side-the expense. But talk to other New Yorkers to find the bargains...they are there.

If you're tired of driving, New York is the best place to live. It is quite costly but you can work two jobs as well if you need to make ends meet. I love New York, because aside from its diversity, it is very trendy as well.
