A placebo refers to a treatment that does not directly affect symptoms of a disease or their cause. The improvement after a placebo is given is largely due to psycosomatic effects.
Every drug, treatment, and surgery has a placebo effect. This is why when they are in trials a placebo is given to see what the actual effects of the treatment are. If they are no greater than the placebo it is considered ineffective.
