It is generally very safe. Anesthesiologists are very skilled at what they do, and complications are very rare.

You will have to be completely honest with your doctor about how much you drink and if you do any drugs, because this will effect how your liver processes the anesthesia.

As safe as the surgeon or anesthesiologist administering. Check for safety: should always be placed on oxygen for the duration of the procedure; blood pressure, pulse ox (oxygen levels and pulse rate) monitoring is a must, EKG monitoring is a good sign of safety. It is also your responsibility as the patient to reveal ALL medications you are taking as well as any illicit drugs - this can have a large affect on sedation. It is always recommended to not eat anything for 6 hours before surgery and usually nothing to drink for 2 hours before (this is up to the surgeon or anesthesiologist). Most sedation medications remain in your system for 6-8 hours after surgery - so driving is a definite no-no and no decision making either (put away credit cards and stay away from infomercials!). Unlike general anesthesia, sedation allows the person to maintain their own airway and respond when needed. The patient is not intubated (a tube down the throat).

Very safe...and a lot better than going in without anesthesia. There are a few cases of people being "awake" during surgery even though they've been sedated, but it's rare

I was really worried about this too before a surgery, but it actually was a pretty amazing experience. One moment I was awake, and the anesthesiologist said "Im going to count back from 5, and you probably wont hear me say 2...I remember 5, 4, and then I was OUT like a light for a couple hours - woke up feeling mildly disoriented because I could remember nothing for the last 2 hours of my life, no dreams, nothing....but after 10-20 minutes of being awake I was mostly with it. Thats some powerful stuff they got! works like a charm...I don't think there are too many complications, they've got it pretty worked out.

Safer than doing those procedures without anesthesia.
