There is this presentation ball coming up for our school and we have to find a dance partner pretty soon. There is this guy that I really wanna ask but I haven't spoken to him in ages so I don't know whether he's going or whether he already has a partner. I'm also really shy and have no idea how to go about asking him. Any hints? By the way he's really shy too...Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You might be afraid to rejection and if he's shy also, he could be also very afraid of rejection. So the best way for you two to ask and start a conversation is sending him a note, a small letter, or an email.
Just ask him and see what happens.

Maybe find a quiet time and place to ask him, that way you dont have the crowds that make both of you nervous.
