and is it more hip than San Francisco?

For the same reason 'the Village' was the hip place to live too. All the artists, musicians, etc. moved there because it was really cheap. The 'cool' people started moving to Brooklyn more often because they couldn't afford Manhattan anymore and people were getting HUGE apartments and loft spaces for a fraction of the rent. Word spread that Brooklyn wasn't just for guidos and hoods and more and more people started moving there. Totally ghetto neighborhoods began to get gentrified and bars, clubs, art galleries, cafes and boutiques began to open in certain 'artsy' areas. Suddenly, everyone wanted to live there because they realized it wasn't as dangerous as they thought it was and there was a whole 'cool' art/music scene that developed. It became flooded with college kids and then the yuppies felt 'safe' enough to start moving there too. Now, luxury condos are going up all over the place and rich people are moving from Ohio (or wherever) directly to Brooklyn and not even bothering to try to live in Manhattan anymore. It got the reputation for being 'hip' and cheap so now everyone wants to live here. I don't know if it's more hip than San Francisco but it seems like it is at this point. Honestly, it's lost a lot of it's hipness already because it's getting way to expensive here and the people who made it 'hip' in the first place (artists, musicians) and being forced out because of rising rents. It's just turning into yuppieville now.

Brooklyn, at least the areas talked about in the crap-hop music you probably listen to, is an absolute toilet. There are decent areas, but the wrong neighborhood means the WRONG NEIGHBORHOOD, and those are plentiful.
