Climates in N, America and E, Asia are similar. Here in China and Japan, veges are cheaper than meat and fish.

It all dates back to the Cowboy Era. America has a history of being a cattle producing nation. If it weren't for the Beef industry, much of the American west would remain unpopulated. For most farmers, it's much more practical and cheaper to raise animals rather than vegetables. Cows can survive a heat or cold spell much better than a tomato or head of lettuce.

It is about the same in the area I live it, if not cheaper for vegetables. The price of meat is going up quite a bit lately, but veggies have stayed fairly stable.

I wish I knew that answer. However I can tell you that it is a huge contributing factor to obesity in America! I can't afford to buy enough fresh fruits and veggies for the recommended daily amount, but hamburger helper always fits into the budget just fine.

I'm not sure where you got your information, but at the grocery store here...hamburger, ( and not the top of the line stuff) is $2.30 a pound. A sirloin steak is $3.99 up a pound. That's a whole lot of green beans.
