I know it's not the best way to go, but I bought a bucket sangria mix from Linens&Things the other day and wanted some honest opinions of a good red wine that wont cause a killer headache to go with it.
I love Sangria from restaurants, but have never had an authentic one in Spain, yet!
I've done some internet research but wanted your opinions also.
Thanks!

Just a FYI- I've never really been a wine drinker so I have no idea what tastes good. Wine coolers, sure. Sweet liquors or mixed drinks are more my thing.

Here is a Sangria I just made at home, its the best I've taste, nothing like a homemade Sangria. I recommend a Merlot for the Sangria, but you could use almost any dry red wine you like alone.

Go to your local high quality liquor store like an ABC.. ask to see their selection of wines from Spain. Then find one, like a Burgundy or Merlot.
We owned a Mediterranean Restaurant and we had an awesome Sangria that I made everyday fresh and I used Merlot and also Bandy among the other ingredients, nothing package mixed for us, wouldn't touch hat stuff. If you want an authentic type recipe, search the web, package mixes will not even come close.

The best red wine to go with your Sangria mix is the one you like by itself. I would go for a mid to low priced version, maybe to keep it authentic, find a Spanish wine. My philosophy is, if I don't like it alone, why would I like it mixed with something?
