It's like a huge vacuum in their lifestyle. Did this sort of thing happen in Eastern Europe or am I misinformed?

Not only did it happen in Eastern Europe but all over the world people are doing extreme things because of sheer idleness. Just look at all of the extreme reality shows, all of the bizarre murders, unnecessary molesting of women and small children.

All of the abuse, bullying, stealing, stalking, etc.

If the idle minds were set on things above and not on things of this earth, all of the above would not be so. Instead, because of these things, society is a prime example of what happens when the majority stop believing in God and have to much time on their hands.

What happens when a lot of people stop watching football and they have all this time on their hand? (Or even two, if they have two?)

When we want to believe in somebody or something we automatically juxtaposition our minds between the objects of interest or belief and ourselves addressing individually as "I".Taking all things into account including the above GOD is the most generalized expression encompassing everything from within as well as without. Any singular / plural concept or belief does not effect this generalized expression nor save time or trouble in whatever way we act. Actions of the past cannot be truly recalled or enacted but those at present can be controlled rationally and those of future can be planned in a logical manner. To live a happy and contented life without causing undue harm either to oneself or unto others is the best policy beyond all personal beliefs and dogmatic convictions.

Where are all these people who have stopped believing in God?

You can leave a religion, but still believe in a higher power. That's why religious statistics are largely useless. You might as well ask something like, "How many people are happy?"

Why would not believing in god give me extra time? I work very hard and when I play, I play very hard. I come to Y!A for stress relief. It's cheaper than therapy and drugs.

civilisation needs a common ground to keep it together when the old symbols no longer touch the hearts of mankind then we are in a wasteland we need a new one that does touch the inner reaches of our minds and gets us to think outside of ourself and inside or ourselves. We need a new mythology. I hope that new one includes all of mankind as one. and OUR whole planet as a sacred place.
