general tips:

1. change the oil: dirty oil reduces mileage.

2. maintain proper tire pressure

3. reduce weight: the best way to do this, especially in an SUV, is to remove extra bench seating if not needed.

4. lower revs (standard): use 1 higher gear than what you would normally use. keep revs under 2k at all times.

5. lower revs (automatic): do not speed up too quickly. gradually speed up so that the transmission automatically shifts to the higher gear sooner. keep revs under 2k at all times.

6. avoid using heaters and a/c where possible. in my personal experience, you can gain 20-40% more miles to the gallon simply by using them less often.

7. avoid changes in speeds: try to drive at consistent speeds rather than low-high-low. this is why "highway miles" are always higher than "city miles".

8. buy a smaller car: in some cases, a larger car adds the equivalent to another car payment every month in gas.

9. buy a car with a smaller engine: most suv's come with v6 engines. a 4 cylinder engine uses a lot less gas.
