I got a very nice detailed response from some of you. Is it standard to be given pain meds and antibiotics after a root canal as I have gotten neither?

I've had several root canals and sometimes have received pain meds, sometimes not. I don't recall being given antibiotics.

The three root canals I have had, I have had both antibiotics and pain relief but you don't have to have them. If there's no infection to kill you won't need the antibiotics. If the pain isn't too bad you won't need the pain killers.

I hate the dentist but did find that root canals (the front ones at least) were no worse than fillings.

I have had 7 root canals and have never been given antibiotics after wards and they tell me to take Tylenol for the pain. If it gets to bothering you too bad, call the dentist and request some pain medicine. Mine never hurt bad enough to require it but everyone is different. It gets better very quickly, I promise.

I've been in the neither boat myself. Since it's not an open wound, I doubt the necessity of antibiotics in general. Other than wisdom teeth removal, I've never received anything but Motrin.

Only if there is some kind of visual infection in the xray.....The dentist that i work for usually gives pain med. It all really depends on the dentist......Not all of them are alike! Good luck! Most endodontist recommend that patients take aleve.
