I always see people on tv and in the movies being in rooms with only red lights when they develop their film. Why does the room have to be red? Does it help to see the prints better?

These red lights are what we call safelights and are used for black and white printing as well as for working with ortho film. These safelights allow you to safely handle and process black and white prints becuase black and white paper is not sensitive to red or amber lights. If you notice in the movies they are always printing black and white photos.
On the other hand, color paper is sensitive to all spectrums of light so when you are printing and handling color paper you have to do it in a completely dark darkroom.
Regarding the development and processing of color or black and white film, in no case should you ever expose film to safelight, unless of course that is ortho film.
Below is an article which explains more in depth what a safelight is.

the red is so you can see whats going on in the movie. There is no light when the actual developing is going on.The red light is on the outside of the darkroom door to warn people not to come in.Aftr the negatives have been fixed and the print has had its first fixative bath a little very dim red light can be used to view the work. all of this darkness and use of colored light is to protect the film chemicals from being overexposed.
