Hello, I hope that this helps, Myself I have been doing tattoos for fifteen years and I Have been an artist for better than 40 years. And it is my firm belief that when getting a tattoo, the tattoo should be an extention of oneself both in attitude and personality. What this means is ask yourself when people see the tattoo what do you want it to say to them about "you". At the moment that the tattoo hits there eyes it should speak to them from within the deepest parts of you. So often people fall into peer pressure or what they think is " cool " at that particular moment. Walk ins are simply the worst from a board that everyone has. let your tattoo be special and one of a kind. The design should involve what you like in life and your personality and a veritable entity outside of your physical appearance. If you need assistance you can contact me at abstain2@yahoo.com I am known as "sketch" dubbed so by the fellas and some very special people to me at a very difficult decade and a half. Which I shall explain further if you contact me ? I Will show you some of my artwork and my portrait work which is phenominal at best. I can and will help just ask tattoo charlie the famous tattooist out of louisville ky and magazine fame. love and respects ..... sketch a.k.a. Wayne

1st, it should be something you won't be embarrased to explain to your children or grandchildren. You may not be planning to be a parent, but life throws curves at you when you least expect.
2nd, location is everything. A girlfriend had a butterfly tattoed just above her left breast. It now looks like a sadly overweight moth. Tats done over bone hurts more than tats that aren't.
3rd, as some others have said, pick something that has special significance to *you*. I have a quarter moon with a star between the horns on my chest where gravity has had little effect. I chose this because it was the phase the moon was in on the day of my birth. A tatto is forever (yes, they can be removed. One method is to have the ink burned out with lasers, another method is very like sanding the tat off, and some can NOT be removed)
4th, and probably The Most Important, shop around for a tatto artist. Get references. Hepatitis and other blood-born diseases are NOT fun. And please, please resist the temptation to allow a friend to do it because the friend costs less money --unless the friend's a licensed tat artist.
The guy who did mine recommended a different color than I had chosen for the moon. I asked why. He said his would age well. That was 20 years ago, and though the black's faded a bit, the yellow he chose is still yellow.
Good luck. Oh, and do follow the tat artists' reommendations for after-care.

Do something you love.. I mean it is a personal expression not what we think but I had a goth friend and one day we drew a rose on the back side of her arm about the length of her arm it llooked really freaking cool when her arm was up it looked like a rose on a casket when it was down it just looked like a cool rose on a part of the body you dont see a lot of chicks having tats (She didnt get it on her) So this is an original idea.

are you kidding me with this? A tattoo is a permanent thing on your body. Getting something just to get it is not a smart move. I know my first tattoo was a quick decision because the artist at the shop said he couldnt do what I wanted, so my friend and I picked a generic egyptian flash off the wall. If it werent for the fact that my tattoo has meaning to me and my best friend has the same one, it would be covered up already...
My advice is to not rush into anything, think about what you want and THEN talk to your artist to draw it up. I waited almost 2 years before getting my 2nd tattoo because I wanted to make sure it was not something I would regret in 10 or so years...

I'm from the old world.....and today I saw a lady at the grocery store who had a "tattoo" applied many years ago....her skin was smooth and soft when she was young....but now it's full of wrinkles and the "tattoo" doesn't look like what it once did.....I'm telling you this so you can look at yourself in the mirror and think about you body in the next 20 or 30 years....do you want to have marks on your skin that have no real design any longer...and just look like veins...that is what the cashier's arms looked like.....What you want as a young person is not what you desire at an older age ....so think about it before you join your friends ....
I'm not trying to be a smarty........just telling you so you will think about it before sitting there getting the needle....

Something meaningful...don't just pick something pre-made, that is not original. Talk with your artitst about ideas you have and let them create a custom piece so you will be the only one with your own special piece of body art!

If you are stumped you are not ready, yet.
It should be something you are into and means a lot to you.
Look through books on symbols maybe you will find something there to fire your mind up, and good luck.

don't just get a tattoo to get a tattoo....based on your question, you're doing just that. Think about what has meaning to you and what you would want tattooed on you FOREVER. Try for something that won't lose meaning to you and that you'll regret later. No one on here can help you choose a tattoo that would be good for you because no one on here knows you.

Considering I don't know you and what you like.
I can answer the question based on what I have a tattoo of an solitaire eye with a teardrop, abstract tattoo of a tiger and a half crescent moon with shooting stars around it.
Working on my next tattoo...butterfly on lower back with shooting stars around it. butterfly will be rainbow-color.
