My family adopted a chihuahua today from a local animal shelter. Her name annoys the HELL out of me and I desperately want to change it, but we're all having trouble thinking of something.

Her name is Alesai..or something of that nature. It's pronounced ALICE-A and they call her Zay Zay for short. It absolutely needs to be changed. I know it has to at least sound like her original name for her to recognize it, and I told my mother to just name her Allyson and call her Ally or Allie for short. But she doesn't like that. I also told her to totally disregard the Zay Zay because it gets on my nerves. But I don't want to make it hard on the dog who is five years old. Any tips or name suggestions?

first of all i really dont think that is a bad name..its different! But if you want to change it it would probably be best to change it to something similar to what she has now, just so she wont be confused since she has been called Alesai for bout 5 years now.
cant really give you a name since i dont know the personality of the dog..but good luck!

It does NOT have to sound like the original name. You can start calling her (for example) Lady Zay Zay and then after a few days of that, simply call her Lady. She'll get used to Lady as her name. I adopted a dog from a shelter and no one knew what his name was. I named him and he had no trouble quickly learning the name I called him. The tone of voice is a lot of it.

How about Shortie? If it's a hairless Chihuahua: Baldy
Furry Chihuahua: Hairy or Furry
What about Zippy? or Zuke?

It's my proffessional opinion that you NOT change the name of a five-year-old dog. It will confuse her and will take quite a while for her to adjust. It's so much easier if you just accept the name. Please keep in mind that this dog is in a new home, with a new family, and getting used to that is difficult enough, but changing her identity also? Don't be so hard on the poor thing.

Since chihuahuas r associated with Mexico, I`d go for a name associated with that country, like......Tia, ChiChi, Tequila, Nina,Chica, Chili.
